Justice

Data scrolled by, numbers and names and percentages all blurring together.

He stepped away, closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. Tried vainly to ignore the throbbing headache that started at the base of his skull and stretched his scalp as tight as a drum.

Who would be sent to die this night?

You’ve been at this too long, jeered a silent voice, you’ve grown soft.

For a brief moment, one ephemeral instant, he was back in ‘Nam. Surrounded by the filthy, half-starved faces of his men, all looking to him for hope, for leadership, for strength. Don’t fail us now.

His tired shoulders rolled back into military attention. The target was one of the worst of the scum out there; a man who dealt in chemical weapons, nuclear triggers, anthrax and the bruised and battered bodies of slaves. He had to be brought down.

The ends were imperative. The means were nasty, but necessary.

He owed it to his superiors. He owed it to his country.

He owed to those men, twenty years ago, in a jungle prison.

Justice.
