The airport bustles with activity. We look like any other father and son traveling together. His hand feels so small in mine as Adam and I walk toward the gate to board the plane that will take us to the other side of the world... far away from...
Oh God. It's all I can do to go, to part from the woman who has loved me through every single agonizing Hell that I and Section One have forced her through. She has been reborn in the baptism of fire.
How can I ask her to come with me now?
Nikita has "given" her life, her father has given his life, and I have reclaimed my son's life. For a moment my motives seem unreasonably selfish. Then I look down and see the love glowing in Adam's eyes. I can only go with deepest gratitude and let her have her dignity.
To ask her to abandon her promise to her father can only belittle her gift... his gift...
Now I must "give" my life in return. I must raise my son, be the father I want to be... it's the only way I can repay them.
What a long way we've come... we've grown together... and we've grown up together.
Nikita, the angry rebel. Michael, the empty survivor. Transformed in the merciless crucible of life and death, learning to love beyond the physical, beyond the intellectual, beyond the realm of the spirit. For the first time since we've known each other, our love has been freely expressed, freely exchanged. The unbearable irony of it all shreds my heart in my breast.

Joy and sorrow are a double-edged sword. Love has come full circle. Father for daughter... father for son... man for woman... I swear to myself my undying vow. We will be together. We will make it work. We will have our dream.
Nikita's eyes follow me everywhere. The shimmer of the ocean, the glow of the midday sky, the welling of her tears as my words of confession, whispered, as only they can be, fall upon her ear for her alone to hear. Her love must now be enough to sustain me until that time when we allow ourselves to fall back into the refuge of each other's arms...
Without consequence...
Without fear...
Until then, my Nikita, keep my soul safe in your heart, as I will keep yours.
