Yes, I can, and the result was justified. The Royals played like it was 16 years ago, and the Cardinals played like it was -- well, two years ago. If it wasn't for Big Mac, I would have watched the Birds get shut out two nights in a row!
Excellent pitching by Suppan. When he entered the 7th with a 2-hit shutout, I was thinking if that was all the Birds were going to do, then heck, let him go all the way and complete the job. But he was going to a lot of 3-ball counts all night, and he tired in the 7th. 119 pitches will tire out anyone.
One highlight came in mid-game when they were showing highlights from the Royals glory years (which is something they do all the time, like the last 15 years didn't count). They showed that play in the 6th game of the '85 World Series. The Royals fans cheered as one. The Cards fans cried out "He's OUT!" as one, and I joined them.
In the middle of the 13th, my wife suggested we move, as by that time, only 10,000 or so were left in the ballpark. Most of these were probably Cardinals fans who were going to stay overnight anyway. We sat near the exit. When Sweeney hit that ball, I said "Time to go home!" and we were out of there. Down the ramp we went, all alone, out into the parking lot, only then were people flowing out. We got into the car, did not have to shake hands with any drunk young men this time, out onto the road, onto I-435, and home free. Drove the limit all the way. 35 minutes, ball park to Olathe. The previous evening, after 35 minutes, we were still trying to get out onto Raytown Road. (Can you say "Put a light there, or at least a cop"?)
So, post mortem: Great game, Royals, and great facility, Kansas City. I'd like to see your Royals play that well the rest of the season, but I said that last October about the Chiefs. I'll believe it when I see it. It's not fair. You save your best for St. Louis and let everyone else walk over you.
