各學派對同一部經典的解碼經常有不同的看法，因而產生天壤之別的解讀。

例如《老子》〈道可道章第一〉首句，就至少有「道、可道、非常道」與「道可道，非常道」兩種不同版本的斷句方式，意義完全不同。

前句意思為「大道可分三等，道、可道與非常道」；後句意思則為「大道若是可以用言語來表達，便非不變真理」。

從這裡可以明顯發現，當連貫文本遭到切割之後，意義將會不斷滑動，使文本解讀更加活潑、有彈性，而這種不確定性 (indefiniteness)，正與解構主義所強調的「文本開放性」(thetextual openness)相互呼應。
