Hope this helps: Tower hill and trinity Square are one and the same: Info from last year -

The Merchant Navy Day Commemorative Services And Re-union 2007.

This Annual service is held on the Sunday nearest to Merchant Navy Day, 3rd September, in memory of Merchant Seafarers who died in World Wars I and II and in conflicts up to the present day.

“Sea of Remembrance”
Red ensign tributes. (BISS).

(BISS) The British & International Sailors’ Society, earlier this year (2007), launched it’s Sea of Remembrance campaign. Prior to the Merchant Navy’s Remembrance Day Service on Sunday 2nd September 2007 and on the day, BISS inspired many seafarers and friends to write a brief message on the reverse of a Red Ensign card, these were distributed by themselves and the Merchant Navy Association. The Red Ensign cards were quickly made into flags, with the supporters personal message in memory of a loved one, friend, colleague or someone who is away at sea displayed.

The Society used the flags to create a ‘Sea of Remembrance’ in the Sunken Garden at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Tower Hill, after the service of remembrance.

The theme is particularly apt this year as the Merchant Navy Association is campaigning to designate more Merchant Navy vessels sunk during the two World Wars as war graves under the Protection of Military Remains Act. This year’s ceremony was also an opportunity to remember the 17 merchant seamen who died during the Falkland’s conflict, which is commemorating its 25th anniversary this year.

The British & International Sailors' Society cannot make the sea less dangerous but it can 'bridge the gap between ship and shore'.

The British & International Sailors' Society provides Christian care and practical assistance to seafarers and their families throughout the world, without regard to nationality, background or faith.
