Subject: Who says they didn't top their last work? Or is it just not what you expected?

Is there really any band that has actually started to suck with later works? I mean did the Deftones say "Holy fuck! This new album sucks ass! But hey people will buy it, let's put it out anyway!" I don't think so. Or is that the band makes a consious decision to try something new and see if it works.
That's when fans get upset because it doesn't sound like the stuff that turned them fans in the first place. That doesn't mean the music sucks it's just that it's different from what you expected. I don't want a band to stay the same every album.
I want to see a band grow and mature, I want to see their sound evolve in time to reflect new influences and experiences. It's great when a band tries a new sound, it may not always work for my personal tastes, but it never really sucks.
I think it sucks when a band churns out the same style of song twelve times an album then does it again for every subsequent album. I get bored and move on.
