They hurt. Stick yourself with a needle, anywhere from 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch deep, about 10 times a second. Then think that the majority of tatts aren't done in 'single needle', but 3-, 8-, or even 16-needle groups, depending on if it's an outline or shading.

But - iffen the Tattoo Gods tell you to get one, then you should.
