I thought I'd throw this one out just to annoy Strega: gay marriages. Yes? No? Why or why not?

Personally, I see no point. Marriage, as a state, is a religious thing, not a law thing. The laws have been adapted to marriage, not the other way around. The aim of marriage is a man and a woman bound in life long dislike for the purpose of having children without hyphenated names. So a gay marriage, which by definition can not bear children, is pointless. Sorry, but if you want to take the Bible for a reference, you can't be married in the eyes of God, because God says your union is unnatural.

Now if they brought in a common law marriage that could apply to all couples, regardless of sex, it would make sense. There's nothing religious about it - it's a legal state. It gives you the right to be next of kin, entitled to inherit and in the US, I believe makes a difference to your insurance and medical stuff. In Oz, we work differently, so they circumvented all this by simply changing the laws to allow people to nominate who they like as next of kin. And in Oz, all you have to do is live together for twelve months to have this come into effect - and entitle your partner to half of everything you own - without doing anything else. If they applied that to all couples, then everyone would be equally screwed when they split up with their partners.

I should add that gay marriage is unlikely to ever become an issue here. We are not.....politically correct enough. *g*
