Kumdo and Kendo

What is Kendo and what is Kumdo? What is the difference between Kumdo and Kendo? They look similar, yet they are definitely different words. In actuality, they represent exactly the same thing. The only difference is in the pronunciation of the Chinese character of Kendo. Kendo is the Japanese pronunciation and Kumdo is Korean style. If this is so, then why do people use these two names officially. The answer is very simple, and it is in the history of Kendo and Kumdo.
Kendo is one of the East Asian martial arts, and specifically, it is from China, Korea and Japan. These three countries are in the Chinese character culture, thus they all still use Chinese characters in their own languages. Kendo is one of these cases and all these countries use the same character. However, the pronunciations are different from each other.
All countries’ Kendo associations except Korea’s use the Japanese pronunciation, Kendo because after WWII, many Japanese Kendo instructors went to many countries, and they spread Kendo all over the world. They did also very important roles when the countries’ Kendo associations were established. Therefore, most countries use Japanese names and vocabulary. The name of the world’s association is also the World Kendo Association.
On the other hand, only Korea uses Kumdo because the Korean Kumdo Association was established in 1895, which was ten years earlier than the year when the Japanese Kendo Association was established, for the first time in the world. There was no rule of naming or any former world association, thus the Korean association could use Korean pronunciation in its name. However, at that time, because Korea was a powerless country, and it was occupied by Japan illegally, the association was not able to announce Kumdo over the world while Japan did.
Due to these reasons, only Korea was not able to spread the name, Kumdo, like Kendo. Therefore most countries know only Kendo but not Kumdo, even though the World Kendo Association admitted these two different names officially.
Consequently, Kumdo and Kendo are the same sport, but only the names and the vocabulary are different from each other.
