GILES
Hello Ethan.

ETHAN
Hello Ripper.

ETHAN
What? No hug? Aren't you pleased to see your old mate, Rupert?

GILES
I'm just surprised I didn't guess it was you. This Halloween stunt stinks of Ethan Rayne. It's sick, brutal, and it harms the innocent.

ETHAN
Oh, and we all know that you are the champion of innocents and all things pure and good, Rupert. It's quite a little act you've got going here, old man. The Watcher, sniveling, tweed-clad guardian of the Slayer and her kin? I think not. I know who you are, Rupert, and I know what you're capable of. But they don't, do they? They have no idea where you come from.

GILES
Break the spell, Ethan. Then leave this place and never come back.

ETHAN
Oh, Rupert, you're scaring me.

Giles punches him in the gut with a left, making him double over, and
follows up with a right to the face.


From The Dark Age:

GILES
I was twenty-one, studying history at Oxford. And, of course, the occult by night. I hated it. The tedious grind of study, the... overwhelming pressure of my destiny. I dropped out, I went to London... (exhales) I fell in with the worst crowd that would have me. We practiced magicks. Small stuff for pleasure or gain. And Ethan and I discovered something... bigger.

BUFFY
Eyghon.

GILES
Yes. One of us would, um... go into a deep sleep, and the others would, h, summon him. It was an extraordinary high! (smiles nervously) God, we were fools.

BUFFY
You couldn't control it.

GILES
One of us, Randall, he lost control. Eyghon took him whole. We tried to exorcise the demon from Randall, but it killed him. No. We killed him. We thought we were free of the demon after that. But now he's back. And one by one, he will kill us all.

GILES
I never wanted you to see that side of me.

BUFFY
I'm not gonna lie to you. It was scary. I'm so used to you being a grownup, and (inhales) then I find out that you're a person.

GILES
Most grownups are.

BUFFY
Who would've thought?

GILES
Some are even, uh... shortsighted, foolish people.

BUFFY
So, after all this time, we finally find out that we *do* have something in common. Which, apart from being a little weird, is kind of okay. (pauses) I think we're supposed to be training right now.

Teaser

1 INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH, LIBRARY – DAY 1

BUFFY runs from the stacks and flips over the barrier and onto the table. She rolls off onto the floor and someone off camera begins firing crossbow bolts at her, she dodges them all and then kicks one out of the way. Another one comes flying at her and she can’t dodge and it hits her in the leg. She looks down at the impact, surprised.

BUFFY
Ow! I think you bruised it.

Pull back to reveal GILES standing there with crossbow in hand.

GILES
(angry)
Bruised it? If you’d been training like you’re supposed to you should be able to deflect knives by now, not just blunted crossbow bolts.

BUFFY
The day I let you throw knives at me is the day I fall in love with Spike.

Giles smiles slightly

BUFFY
Come on Giles, what’s up?

GILES
It’s nothing, it’s...

BUFFY
Ethan?

GILES
Ethan.

BUFFY
Don’t worry, we’ll catch him eventually.

GILES
I wouldn’t be so sure, Ethan is... slippery. And I don’t want you ever taking him on alone, he’s only human but he’s still dangerous.

BUFFY
Oh come on, how dangerous can he be?

GILES
You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.

Buffy looks on, waiting.

GILES
And there’s a lot about me, the things I did... things I can never make up for.

BUFFY
Try me.

Giles takes off his glasses and cleans them.

GILES
I was ten when I discovered my destiny to be a watcher...

Opening credits sequence

Act 1

2 INT. GILES’ RESIDENCE, 1964 – DAY 2

A 10 year old Giles sits in a chair, holding tightly onto a model fighter jet. His FATHER sits across from him, a very English man, obviously a Giles.

GILES’ FATHER
Now Rupert, I want you to listen to me carefully. Can you do that?

Giles nods encouragingly so he continues:

GILES’ FATHER
When I was your age, my mother sat me down and delivered this speech to me, and I think it’s time I gave it to you. I know you had your heart set on being a fireman... or a grocer, but some people have a higher calling, a responsibility that comes before anything else, and sometimes means they have to sacrifice what they want, for the good of what is needed. Do you understand what I’m saying?

Giles shakes his head.

GILES’ FATHER
We are people like that. We have a destiny higher than that of ordinary people. The monsters under your bed are really there, and we have a responsibility to fight them. When you grow up you, as I have, will become a Watcher and use the slayer to fight demons.

GILES
What’s a slayer?

GILES’ FATHER
The slayer is a tool to fight evil, we are the barrier that stems the tide of monsters on the face of the Earth. It’s your birthday soon and we’re going to send you to the best school we can, where you’ll learn to fight these things. The Watcher’s Academy in southern Hampshire, they’ll teach you languages, fighting and most of all about demons. From there you will go on to university and then hopefully, if you’re good enough, you’ll go on to use a slayer of your own.

GILES
Can I still fly a jet?

DISSOLVE TO:

3 INT. OXFORD UNIVERSITY, LECTURE HALL, 1974 - DAY 3

A very geeky looking Giles in a lecture hall making notes on the history lecture he is attending. He’s got short hair, very neat and tidy.

LECTURER
Okay, that’s enough for today. Remember the homework, I want it in before next lecture.

Everyone shuffles out of the classroom, Giles picks up all his belongings and tries to push forward, obviously looking trying to get to a black girl in front of him. Unable to get close he gives up, and moves over to the front of the classroom and to the elderly male LECTURER.

LECTURER
Ah, Mr Giles. You have the homework for me?

GILES
Uh, of course Professor.

Looking at the professor he stares him in the eyes. The professor looks mesmerised for a moment then holds out his hand as if receiving a paper.

LECTURER
Thank you Rupert.

Giles leaves, but there’s still a male student in the seat watching. He’s wearing a T-shirt, and dark trousers.

STUDENT
Now isn’t that interesting.

CUT TO:

4 INT. OXFORD UNIVERSITY, CORRIDOR – DAY 4

Giles runs out of the lecture theatre and again sees the black girl, talking to a group of friends. He runs up behind her, out of breath.

GILES
Olivia!

The girl turns around and looks at Giles and we see a young OLIVIA looking back.

GILES
Olivia, I um, was wondering if you, if you’re weren’t busy that is, would like to come with me to...

OLIVIA
I’m sorry, do I know you?

She looks confused for a moment, and as Giles says nothing she smiles and turns back to her friends who walk off.

CUT TO:

6 INT. GILES’ ROOM – DAY 6

Giles walks into his room and locks it. He throws his work onto the floor, where there already lies a large pile of discarded textbooks and notes.

GILES
(mockingly)
“Um, Olivia, I was um, wondering, if you weren’t busy that is...” Stupid.

He goes over to his ansaphone, and plays the message on it.

VOICE
Rupert, it’s your father. Look, I know we’ve had our problems but... Look, please. Just call me. You know where we are.

Paying no attention to the message he goes over to the wardrobe and opens it, pulling out an old acoustic guitar and sitting on the bed and beings to play.

GILES (Singing)
Sitting only two rows behind
I try and work out what goes on in your mind
The strength of your love, it’s clearly abundant
And dwarfed only by you beauty....

GILES (Speaking to himself)
What rhymes with abundant?

Unable to think of something he throws his guitar down on his bed.

VOICE
I can’t think of a rhyme, but that was lovely.

Giles turns around to see a figure emerge from the shadows, it’s the man from Giles’ class.

GILES
Who are you?

MAN
Sorry Rupert, I should probably introduce myself. I’m Ethan. Ethan Rayne.

Everything freezes for a second.

BUFFY (V.O)
How did he get into your room? How did he know your name?

GILES (V.O)
I’m getting to that if you’ll let me.

BUFFY (V.O)
Okay, okay.

Things return to normal.

GILES
How did you get into my room? And how did you know my name?

ETHAN
Oh I’ve been watching you for a long time Rupert.

He opens a drawer and pulls out a book, period romance.

ETHAN
Bodice Ripper, eh? Well I never would have believed it. Always the quiet ones.

GILES
That’s um, required reading, some very factual, um...

Ethan looks over the book.

ETHAN
I’m sure it is, although I don’t remember it.

GILES
You take history too?

ETHAN
Well yes and no. They kicked me out last year, said I was a loose cannon. But in all the confusion I forgot to stop going. Well what can I say? You meet such interesting people.

GILES
How did you get in here? The door was locked.

ETHAN
I have my ways.

He walks over to the door and pulls it open.

GILES
I’m sure I locked that.

ETHAN
I know. You did. But, I come and go as I please.

GILES
Magick.

ETHAN
(confirming)
Magick. Though you’re no stranger to breaking and entering yourself are you Rupert.

He picks up a hair-pin off the desk.

ETHAN
In the more, traditional manner of course. (beat) You’re quite the little rebel underneath that boring exterior aren’t you?

GILES
I suppose you’re here to tell me I should be doing better with myself. You are watcher’s council I’m guessing?

ETHAN
Me, in authority? Can’t see it myself. No, I’m here to make you an offer. How do you feel about the dark magicks Rupert?

GILES
Like they shouldn’t be meddled with, especially not by amateurs.

ETHAN
Are you sure? I could show you things you never even dreamed of. Get you things you never knew you wanted: money, power... Women.

At this last one Giles looks interested.

GILES
Women?

ETHAN
Thought that might get you. A love spell could be just the thing you need.

GILES
And you could teach me this?

ETHAN
I could. For a favour.

GILES
What kind of favour?

ETHAN
There’s a group of people I want you to meet, we need a fifth to, complete a ritual.

GILES
A coven?

ETHAN
More or less. You game?

GILES
Sure.

CUT TO:

7 EXT. HIGH STREET – NIGHT 7

Giles and Ethan walk down the street. Giles is still dressed very conservatively, whereas Ethan looks cool.

ETHAN
Now we can’t have you meeting them like that.

GILES
Like what?

ETHAN
Sorry to say it Rupert, but you’re not exactly gonna fit in where we’re going.

They walk past a clothes shop and Ethan peers into the window.

ETHAN
This’ll do.

Ethan leads Giles around to a side entrance.

ETHAN
Yes, but with your talents I’m sure we can get around that.

Ethan pulls out the paper-clip and hands it to Giles. Who pick-locks the door with ease.

ETHAN
Well, we might make a rebel out of you yet.

CUT TO:

8 INT. CLOTHES SHOP – NIGHT 8

Giles and Ethan look around. Ethan picks up a leather jacket and throws it to Giles.

ETHAN
Here, put this on.

Giles takes off the jumper he’s wearing and puts on the jacket. Ethan throws him a pair of jeans.

ETHAN
These too.

Giles looks around for somewhere to try them on.

ETHAN
Oh dear God... we’re robbing them Rupert, they’re not going to complain if you don’t use the changing room.

GILES
With you watching?

Ethan rolls his eyes and turns around for Giles to put the jeans on.

ETHAN
Finished?

GILES
Yep.

Ethan turns around and looks at him.

ETHAN
Perfect, now if only we can do something about the...

He walks over to Giles and ruffles his hair, he looks pretty damn cool.

ETHAN
Hmm, you’ll do I suppose. Come on, we’re late already.

GILES
Late for what?

CUT TO:

9 INT. BAR – NIGHT 9

A stage is being prepped for a gig in the corner and Giles and Ethan walk in without any notice paid to them at all. Giles looks surprised, he could never have got in somewhere like here the way he looked before.

They walk over to a table where three people are already sitting. They are DEIDRE, PHILLIP and RANDALL. They’re all dressed similarly to Ethan.

DEIDRE
You’re late.

ETHAN
What can I say, he’s a perfectionist (indicates Giles). Needed time to prepare

DEIDRE
And are you going to introduce us to your friend?

GILES
Oh, hello, I’m Rup-

ETHAN
Uh, this is Ripper.

DEIDRE
Hi Ripper. How do you guys know each other?

Ethan puts his arm around Giles who, again, looks pretty confused by the whole thing.

ETHAN
Oh we go way back don’t we, mate.

CUT TO:

10 INT. SEEDY BAR – NIGHT 10

All the members of the group, including Giles are sitting around the table talking. They’ve been drinking whiskey for a while now, even Giles looks relaxed. Tales of Brave Ulysses by Cream plays in the background.

GILES
What’s this? (indicating the music) It’s good.

RANDALL
Tales of Brave Ulysses. Eric Clapton is a God! You play?

GILES
A little.

PHILLIP
Hey Ripper, want a smoke?

He offers a cigarette to Giles who looks worried again. He doesn’t smoke.

GILES
Um...

He looks over at Ethan, who sternly returns his gaze.

GILES
Yeah, thanks.

He takes on and lights it, coughing it down. No-one notices.

ETHAN
Hey Ripper, do you remember that time, what was it 2, 3 years ago now? Me and Ripper here were caught speeding in, who’s car was it...

GILES
(playing along)
Simon’s.

ETHAN
Yes! Simon’s car, doing maybe 100 miles an hour and suddenly we get pulled over by this police, guy. Anyway, he comes over all puffed up and asks Ripper here to get out and put his hands on the bonnet. So, he opens the door and Ripper steps out carefully, puts his hands on his head and knees the guy in the bollocks! Knocks him out cold too. Then, if that wasn’t bad enough, deflates the tyres on the car and handcuffs him to the steering wheel.

They’ve all impressed by this; obviously having no love for the police.

ETHAN
And that’s not even the worst of it...

VOICE
Really? Because you know, that last story was pretty damn interesting.

The voice is revealed to belong to a POLICEMAN standing over the table, holding Giles’ jumper from the shop.

POLICEMAN
Which one of you is Rupert Giles?

GILES
(nervously)
That would be me, sir.

POLICEMAN
I followed you from the store, you didn’t even check if anyone watched you breaking in. This (indicates the jumper) had your name in it.

GILES
I, uh.

He turns around to look at the others, they’re all excited, waiting to see what he does.

GILES
Um...

This is his make or break moment. He likes these guys, can he really hit a guy?
Yup. He punches the guy in the gut. It’s a good hit and he keels over and Giles knees him in the face, sending him to the floor.
Everyone in the group looks impressed, even Giles is surprised by his own ability and smiles back. The only person not looking impressed is Ethan, who’s in shock, unable to believe this from the geeky magic kid he met only hours earlier.
Everyone in the bar is looking at them.

GILES
We’d better get out of here sharpish.

DEIDRE
It’s about time we were moving on anyway, got work to do.

GILES
This spell I’ve been hearing so much about. Does one of you want to tell me what it is?

ETHAN
Trust me Ripper, you’re going to love it.

END OF ACT 1

ACT 2

11 INT. LIBRARY - DAY

Buffy and Giles still sit at the table.

BUFFY
Let me guess, Eyghon?

GILES
Oh no, far from it, no. We had nowhere near the power needed to summon a demon of Eyghon’s capacity. Not then anyway. No, this was a simple wealth spell. None of them were in university, and they had no jobs either so this was a nice little income for them. It wasn’t much of a spell really, but it was enough to pull me into the group, much to Ethan’s dismay. I suppose he thought he could control me, but within six months I was pretty much in charge. My studies slowly got worse until I dropped out altogether. I suppose I even started to believe some of the stories that Ethan kept telling about me, and with nothing to keep us in Oxford we moved on, to London.

CUT TO:

12 EXT. LONDON HIGH STREET, 1975 - NIGHT

Giles, now very much RIPPER, has long hair and more beefed up walks along with a girl, KATIE, under his arm. Ethan is there too with a similar looking girl, ANNA, at his arm. They’re a couple of years younger than the men, maybe 18. Katie’s blonde, short, almost Buffy looking and Anna a brunette more in line with Willow. Ripper is merrily smoking away, occasionally offering his cigarette to Katie who takes it happily. Blood runs down Ripper’s shirt sleeve, he’s not cut anywhere so obviously it’s not his own.

RIPPER
Now that was fun!

ETHAN
Right, fun.

RIPPER
Oh tell me you didn’t enjoy that.

ETHAN
Maybe I’m strange but I just prefer that whole, not getting killed by an angry mob scene. I think it’s getting old.

RIPPER
Pansy.

Ethan looks ready with a comeback but Ripper is already interested in something else. They’re next to a music shop, an electric bass taking pride of place in the window.

RIPPER
That’s nice. That’s very nice.

Ethan’s looking around distracted, he can sense something. He lifts his hand up when:

RIPPER
Ethan?

Ethan looks back, dazed.

ETHAN
What? Sorry I.... The amp, you want it? I think there’s a side door if you want it.

He pulls out a hairpin and offers it to Ripper.

RIPPER
No need.

He looks down at the shirt.

RIPPER
It’s already ruined.

He pulls off the sleeve and wraps it around his hand, and smashes his hand through the glass. The glass shatters and he pulls out the guitar and plucks at a few of the string.

RIPPER
Nice. Ethan, be a mate and grab that amp for me.

Ethan turns from Ripper and scowls.

RIPPER
(to Katie)
This is gonna be so cool at the gig next week.

ETHAN
What gig?

RIPPER
Didn’t I tell you? Me and Randall formed a band. Got us a drummer and everything.

ETHAN
And you’re called.

Ripper
R and R.

ETHAN
(sarcastic)
How original.

RIPPER
You want to bite your tongue mate.

ETHAN
Sorry... mate.

Ripper starts plucking at the strings, paying no attention to Ethan.

RIPPER
Yeah, this is nice.

CUT TO:

13 INT. BAR – NIGHT 13

The bar is packed, Ripper and Randall are on stage playing the end of Behind Blue Eyes by The Who. Everyone cheers.

RIPPER & RANDALL
Thank you!

They start packing up their things and walk off the stage. Ripper picks up his bass from the sidelines and hands it to Randall who looks impressed

RIPPER
Check it out.

RANDALL
Nice. You got an amp?

RIPPER
Yeah, Ethan swiped it for me.

They walk over to a table and Ethan, Phillip and Deidre are already there. Phillip and Deidre are talking but turn and give them both a complimentary clap, Ethan looks bored. Ripper and Randall sit down.

RIPPER
So who’s getting the drinks in?

PHILLIP
(In the conversation with Deidre)
You sure?

DEIDRE
I want him.

RIPPER
What’s going on?

PHILLIP
You see that guy that just came in?

He indicates a GUY across the room, he’s tall, all muscle and extremely handsome, but currently with an extremely attractive blonde.

DEIDRE
I want him.

RIPPER
I can do that.

He snaps his fingers and the guy says something unheard to the girl he’s with who shouts at him angrily and storms into the bathroom. The guy walks over to them and looks at Deidre.

GUY
Buy you a drink?

DEIDRE
Sure.

She looks back at Ripper and smiles a quick ‘thank you’ at him. They all drink up.
The girl comes out of the bathroom, looking both angry and sad, but most of all she’s vulnerable. Ripper finishes off his drink and stands up, looking over at her.

RIPPER
Duty calls gentlemen.

ETHAN
Another spell? Do you really have to be so obvious with it?

RIPPER
Not a spell. It’s called charm mate, look it up.

Ripper walks over to the girl and they start talking, she laughs slightly and he strokes him hand down her arm. Ethan looks on, fuming with jealousy. He looks over at the man with Deidre and then back at Ripper.

PHILLIP
Man, how does he do it?

Ethan closes his eyes and chants ominously. The man with Deidre suddenly looks up, as if coming out of a trance and looks at Deidre with confusion. He makes his apologies and looks over at Ripper and the girl. Angrily he walks over and taps Ripper on the shoulder.

RIPPER
(to the girl)
I was one of the original members of Pink Floyd you know...
(to the guy)
Yeah? What do...

The man punches Ripper solidly in the jaw sending him to the floor. Ripper reverts to Giles for a moment, he’s shocked and a scared at the big guy towering over him, but he suddenly comes to his senses and Ripper leaps to his feet coldly. A drip of blood comes from his mouth and he wipes it with his finger and looks at it.

RIPPER
You’ll pay for that.

MAN
Oh yeah, what are you gonna do about...

He pauses as Ripper’s eyes turn black and he starts chanting in the same language Ethan used. The man starts blinking erratically then slams his eyes shut, and his hands go up to them in pain.

MAN
Oh God! What are you doing??

Ripper looks on unfeeling as blood begins to pour from the man’s eyes. Ethan runs over and throws up his arm

ETHAN
Vincire!

Green energy shoots from Ethan’s hand, but Ripper deflects it, breaking the spell on the other guy. Ripper and Ethan square off against each other. The man falls to his feet and the girl he was with drops and nurses him.

ETHAN
What the hell is wrong with you?

RIPPER
He attacked me!

Ripper kicks the guy in the gut; Ethan fires another spell at Ripper who deflects it again.

DEIDRE
This isn’t the time for some macho pissing contest! What’s wrong with you two?

ETHAN
(To Ripper)
What’s wrong with me? This isn’t what we’re about! What the hell is wrong with him?

RIPPER
What’s wrong with me? Isn’t this who you wanted me to be? Remember that stories you told them...

He indicates the group who look on, a mixture of being impressed and afraid at the same time.

RIPPER
... Didn’t you want me to be this person? Am I not living up to your expectations.

ETHAN
(Calmly)
Exceeding them, if I’m honest.

RIPPER
Then where’s the bloody problem?

They both calm down a little.

ETHAN
I love a little bit of chaos now and then, we all do. But most of all we like to keep out of the thick of it. Work behind the scenes. We’re the puppet masters. We do what we want and no-one ever sees us. We don’t go around ripping people’s eyes out!

RIPPER
Oh, he’ll be fine. It’ll hurt for a couple of days while he heals up. No permanent damage, didn’t last long enough.

ETHAN
(concerned)
You need to calm down mate, you’re heading to a place you can’t come back from. I don’t like what you’re becoming.

RIPPER
(friendly)
Okay, maybe I went a bit far, but it’s not like I’m out of control. Look, we need to get out of here, I’ve got the feeling the police are on the way. I don’t want any trouble for us.

All the group make a quick exit, Ripper in the centre. Suddenly, out of hearing range of the group the guy starts screaming and clutching his eyes again. As we see Ripper’s face he’s smiling, his eyes black.

Buffy sits listening intently to Giles. He holds his head in his hands.

GILES
I’m not proud of it... What am I saying, of course I’m not proud of it... you’re probably horrified, I shouldn’t be telling you this.

BUFFY
Giles, I... I can’t say I’m not a little scared right now, but you’ve got to tell me everything, I can’t fight this guy if I don’t know who he is.

GILES
And you have the right to know who I am. But I should warn you, it gets worse.

BUFFY
I can take it.

GILES
Are you sure? (beat) That night I felt different, the power was intoxicating. I had to share it with someone....

CUT TO:

EXT. LONDON HIGH STREET – NIGHT

Ripper and Katie walk along a street, talking.

RIPPER
It was like this huge surge of power just.... Katie?

She’s disappeared. Suddenly there’s a rattle from behind the shop, and then a vampire growl.

RIPPER
What the...?

Another crash comes from the alley behind the shop, and a girl can be heard grunting in pain. Ripper runs down the alley.

A group of five vampires have a hold on Katie as another girl lies scared in huddle by the wall.

RIPPER
Hey, you leave her alone!

The vamps turn to face him as he begins to run into the fray, but the distraction caused by Ripper gives Katie time to react. She flip-kicks the vampire in front of her and pulls herself out of the grip of the others. She pulls a stake from behind her and back and stakes one in the heart. He explodes into dust as she begins fighting the others. Ripper looks on in amazement.

VAMPIRE
Slayer!

RIPPER
(to himself)
She’s a slayer...?

KATIE
Ripper, I could use a little help here!

RIPPER
No, I can’t be here. It’s not.... That’s not who I am anymore!

KATIE
What are you talking about? Don’t just stand there watchi...

She’s cut-off as the vampires hold her still again, their leader coming in for the kill. He’s tall, a Mohawk running over his head. Ripper notices two of his fingers are missing as he grabs her throat.

RIPPER
Not a watcher... I don’t have to...

KATIE
RIPPER!!

RIPPER
I can’t... not my destiny... This isn’t....

He backs away slowly as the lead vampire bites her and she screams in pain.

RIPPER
That’s not who I am....

He turns around and runs away.

RIPPER
(whispered)
I can’t help you.

CUT TO:

INT. HIGH SCHOOL, LIBRARY – DAY

Buffy looks on in shock, Giles hanging his head in shame.

BUFFY
You... let her die?

GILES
I couldn’t do anything.

BUFFY
You could have tried. You could have fought.

GILES
I could have, should have, but it scared me. My destiny just kept creeping back, I couldn’t hide from it.

BUFFY
But...

GILES
Buffy, you wanted to hear this. I told you it would be hard, that there were things... That was one of the worst. I can’t justify it, I can’t...

BUFFY
Did you know him?

GILES
Who?

BUFFY
Her watcher. Do you know who it was? Does he know?

GILES
A man named Travers, that night changed him, his views on the slayer. He was never the same after that. Not surprising really.

BUFFY
Does he know, did you tell him?

GILES
No, but he knew we were, involved. He’s never really forgiven me.

GILES
I knew I had to do something, so I found a place, I thought they could... take the pain away. I thought I needed it, and then he showed me.

BUFFY
What?

GILES
Eyghon.

END OF ACT 2

ACT 3

INT. SEEDY BAR – NIGHT

Ripper sits at the bar drunk as hell talking to the BARMAN.

RIPPER
And I mean, I can make my own destiny right? I get to, to choose who I am don’t I? Course I do. Not my fault she couldn’t handle her duty. I shouldn’t have to, slay vampires for her.

BARMAN
Hey pal, I think you’ve had enough.

RIPPER
I think I’ll decide when I’ve had enough.

BARMAN
Ok, that’s enough. Get out.

RIPPER
Get out? I don’t think so...

His eyes turn black and he starts chanting until:

RIPPER
-hiccup-

He falls off his chair, eyes back to normal.

RIPPER
Okay, okay I’m going.

He walks towards the door.

CUT TO:

EXT. LONDON HIGH STREET – NIGHT

Giles walks past the music shop, still boarded up and stops, he can sense something.

RIPPER
What’s that?

He lifts up his hand and waves it in the air.

RIPPER
Warm...

He walks down the alley, Katie’s body peeking out from a pile of trash. He ignores her and walks on, up the wall at the far end. He tries to touch it, but his hand goes through it. He pulls it back quickly.

VOICE
You won’t find answers in there.

Ripper looks around as a young man comes out of the shadows, about the same age as Ripper. He has long stringy hair, it’s RACK.

RACK
I’ve got what you need right here.

Noticing the expression on Ripper’s face he smiles.

RACK
Don’t worry, it’s not drugs. Not strictly speaking anyway. A spell, to stop the confusion. Make everything clear.

RIPPER
No, thank you.

RACK
You know where I am if you need me.

He steps back into the shadows. Ripper walks through the cloak

CUT TO:

INT. WAITING ROOM – NIGHT

The waiting room is exactly the same as Rack’s waiting room only everything is new looking, not run down. People sit patiently waiting for whoever is through the locked door on the other wall. Ripper looks around confused.

VOICE (O.S)
First time?

RIPPER
What?

Ripper turns to see a girl sitting beside him.

GIRL
First time here?

RIPPER
Uh, yeah... What is this place?

GIRL
This is, a sanctuary. For people that need help.

RIPPER
Oh... Why’s it cloaked?

GIRL
To stop the, unsavoury element finding it.

RIPPER
What’s here they’d want?

GIRL
Nothing hurtful if that’s what you mean. Not in the right hands anyway.

A WOMAN comes through the locked door with a patient. He thanks the woman and leaves.
The woman has an amulet around her neck. She walks over to Ripper.

WOMAN
You’re new, come with me.

Ripper stands and follows the woman into the room.

INT. MAIN ROOM – NIGHT

The only item of furniture is a table standing in the centre of the room.

WOMAN
Welcome. How can I help you?

RIPPER
I don’t really know, I’m...

WOMAN
You’re first time here?

Ripper nods

WOMAN
I understand, may I?

She holds out her hand at Ripper’s chest and he nods in agreement. A blue energy crackles from her fingers and she pulls them back sharply.

WOMAN
I cannot help you.

RIPPER
What? Why not?

WOMAN
I have to ask you to leave.

RIPPER
What’s going on??

WOMAN
You are not welcome here!

RIPPER
Why?

A bolt of energy hits Ripper and he is sent flying through the door and the waiting room, out into the back street.

EXT. LONDON HIGH STREET – NIGHT

Ripper lies on his back, looking confused. Clapping can be heard and young Rack steps out from the dark.

RACK
Nice landing.

RIPPER
What do you want?

RACK
Your help.

RIPPER
Why should I help you? Who are you?

RACK
Who I am is not important. What is important is who you are... Rupert.

RIPPER
Oh bloody hell, this never ends well.

Rack looks confused.

RIPPER
So you know who I am, big whoop.

RACK
I do not just know who you are, I know what you are. Destined watcher, rebelling against it, and now you are having a crisis of self. Not sure who you are any more, are you?

RIPPER
How did you know that?

RACK
You do not hide it well.

RIPPER
You promise you can make it stop?

RACK
I can. I can make everything clear, but first I need your help.

RIPPER
I need to get in there:

He indicated the cloak.

RIPPER
I don’t understand. Why not just walk in?

Rack smiles.

RACK
Try it.

Ripper walks as if to go through the cloak, and walks straight into the wall.

RACK
We’re not welcome anymore, something in us is... dark.

RIPPER
What about a teleportation spell?

RACK
The protection spell around it is too strong. We need to bring the wall down. And I cannot do it by myself.

RIPPER
What do I have to do?

CUT (TIMESKIP) TO:

Ripper and Rack stand touching the wall.

RACK
Ready?

Ripper nods

RACK & RIPPER
Horus, we beg thee, hear our prayer
And break this wall of naught but air
Horus, we beg thee, hear our call
Circling arm, bring down the wall

The wall ripples and both Rack and Ripper almost fall through it.

RIPPER
Easier than I thought. There the wall’s down. Now you owe me.

Rack’s eyes turn red, and electricity crackles around his fingers. Ripper grabs his arm in pain. He lift up his shirt to reveal the mark of Eyghon burning red on his arm. It cools and turns black.

RIPPER
What the hell is this?

RACK
A mark.

RIPPER
What’s it for?

RACK
Nothing... without this.

He pulls a parchment out of his pocket and holds it in front of Ripper.

RACK
But I’m not sure you’re ready for this. Maybe I was wrong...

RIPPER
You promised me!

RACK
Yes, and I’m sorry. But it could be disastrous.

RIPPER
Give it to me.

RACK
You’re not ready.

Ripper starts chanting and Rack shuts his eyes in pain. A great cut appears over one of his eyes and blood begins to pour from it. He falls to the ground unconscious. Ripper grabs the parchment and runs out of the alley.

Rack’s eyes open bloodshot. He smiles.

RACK
Maybe I was wrong.

CUT TO:

INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL, LIBRARY – DAY

GILES
I never saw him again, I went back later and the place had gone. Moved on, apparently.

BUFFY
What did you do?

GILES
The parchment was a summoning spell, for Eyghon. Despite my arguments with the group as soon as I introduced Eyghon to them they were quick to forgive me. Except Ethan of course. But he joined in with it, and eventually became addicted, like the rest of us.

BUFFY
The way you tell it Ethan was almost the good guy.

GILES
In a way he was, until ‘it’ happened Ethan probably could have been the best one of us. He was always careful you see.

BUFFY
So what happened to him?

GILES
It wasn’t so much what happened to him, as what happened to us...

CUT TO:

INT. ROOM – NIGHT

Ripper, Ethan, Randall, Deidre and Phillip sit on the floor in a circle. Ethan is in a trance as the others sit around watching.

RANDALL
It’s my turn…

RIPPER
Everyone waits their turn.

Ethan comes out of his trance violently.

ETHAN
Wow... That was, intense.

RIPPER
He’s getting stronger. We all feel it right?

ETHAN
Maybe we should stop it.

RANDALL
Are you insane? That only makes it better, makes you stronger.

RIPPER
He’s right. We’re still the stronger ones, we can control it. We’re not amateurs. You ready Randall?

Randall nods and everyone, even Ethan begrudgingly, follows Rippers lead as they prepare. Randall sits still and goes into a trance as the others chant. The marks of Eyghon glow on all of them, even through their clothes and the mark on Randall glows brightest. He opens his eyes and starts panting.

ETHAN
Something’s wrong.

RIPPER
It’s fine!

ETHAN
We have to stop it!

RIPPER
NO!

Randall screams in pain as his flesh distorts, turning him into Eyghon incarnate. He starts fighting with the others and they try to run. Deidre and Phillip make it out leaving Ethan and Ripper alone with Eyghon/Randall.

RIPPER
Ethan, hold him!

ETHAN
Vincire!

Green energy shoots out from Ethan’s hand and covers Eyghon/Randall. He falls to the floor, frozen.

EYGHON/RANDALL
This won't hold me for long

RIPPER
It doesn't have to

He moves over to Eyghon/Randall.

EYGHON/RANDALL
You know you've got to make a choice right, about who you are? Do you want to be the Watcher, sniveling guardian of the Slayer and her kin, or do you want to be Ripper? I know you, you could be stronger than any of these poor fools, if you had me. Who are you?

Ripper hesitates, unsure of what to do.

EYGHON/RANDALL
I knew it, you're no hero.

RIPPER
No, I'm not.

Giles suddenly reaches down and puts his hand over Randal/Eyghon's nose and mouth, holding them shut. Randall/Eyghon struggles weakly as Giles keeps him still, keeping his calm expression throughout.

A school bell rings.

CUT TO:

INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL, LIBRARY – DAY

Giles looks ashamed.

BUFFY
There was no other choice.

GILES
Wasn’t there? What happened that day ruined countless lives. I ruined them.

BUFFY
But look at all the good you’ve done since then. You’re not him any more. People change, and you’re a good man now.

GILES
Am I? People are still getting hurt Buffy. Even now, twenty years later, people I love are still getting hurt...

He clasps his face in his hand.

BUFFY
Giles, you have to keep going. Tell me what happened next.

GILES
Not right now, I... You have class. We’ll talk about it some other time.

BUFFY
Giles...

GILES
Please Buffy.

Buffy picks up her bag and leaves the library, looking concerned.
Giles begins to cry.

FADE OUT.
