I've always found the specially written narration to be a highlight of light opera Proms. Remember Simon Callow in Die Fledermaus, or the previous G & S presentations of The Gondoliers and Iolanthe?

I agree that it as a mistake for the televised version of a truncated Iolanthe to be fronted by Jo Brand - but it was an even worse mistake in the televised version of The Gondoliers to replace the specially written narration by a deadpan studio rendition of the original libretto.
