In Malcolm Sargent's days, that was precisely what we had on G & S nights - specially written narrative. When the song was over he would turn to the audience and continue with the story of the opera. He had the Prommers (myself included) eating out of his hand. Unfortunately/Fortunately I missed Jo Brand, but I gather she was not well liked.
