Unfortunately, I believe totally out of action is the order of the day.

References are made to the "provision of a suitable electronic alternative" somewhere I've seen repeatedly (either in the proms programme notes, or on those boards detailing the restoration process outside the hall). To which I say "hmmmm".

My previous experiences of the pitch-adjustable electronic organ used when the Berlin Phil and the Oslo Phil did Mahler 2 and the Alpine Symphony respectively, is more like "provision of a totally inaudible electronic alternative". It's clearly impossible to substitute it with something that can approach a match for the real thing. Undoubtedly though, a PA rig on the scale of those used by bands performing at the RAH would at least have a fighting chance. The subsitute in previous years has been pathetic, apparently using either the RAH's standard PA, or even just some internal speakers on the titchy subsitute instrument. As though that's got any chance of cutting the mustard in Mahler 8....

However, whingeing aside, the job has to be done, and done properly. A few years of silence is a small and necessary price to pay to restore the tribute to Victorian excess to its full stomach-shaking glory. And to render it once again the largest in the country in the process. Listening to the 1959 Horenstein recording of Mahler 8 reveals just how much power and gravitas it's lost over recent years....
