As it's a comlete rebuild various vital bits (including much of the pipework) will be shipped off to the organ builders. The Ely cathedral organ was only brought back into action last year after at least two years. The St. George's, Windsor organ was also hors de combat when I sang there in August last year (at the time they said they were going to have to move the digital replacement should the Queen Mother die, as it was blocking the entrance to the King George V chapel - never did find out if they had finished the rebuild in time). Peterborough Cathedral organ needs a complete rebuild following the fire last year, this isn't expected to be back in action until 2005! (this is partly due to the amount of cleaning need on the rest of the building).

So far as digital organs go, the one being used as a long-term substitute at Peterborough doesn't seem to bad. There is a bank of speakers hidden in the triforium, linked to the console by two, 2 inch diameter cables! It seems to be capable of producing a reasonable volume of noise - although I believe that there was some consternation when one of the speakers started producing smoke on Easter morning.
