The fountain appears in the middle of the arena during most proms concerts but not during the rest of the year. It is home to a range of exotic "pondlife" (generously supplied by prommers and protected by international wildlife organisations) such as the "greater barcoded flamingo".

The BBC (increasingly) dispense with the fountain when more arena space is required to compensate for that taken up by television cameras / recording equipment / extra staging etc. Hence viewers on TV may not realise it still exists.

If you listen carefully on the radio you can sometimes tell when the fountain is in place - not by the sound of trickling water but just at the point when the audience is hushed for the second half of the concert and there's a chorus of "Turn the bloody fountain off!!"
