On a more serious note, a quote from "The Henry Wood Proms" by David Cox (published by the BBC in 1980):

Ornamental, and suggesting cooling streams in summer, the foutain is also symbolically a link with the al fresco forerunners of the Proms; music among the beauties of nature heard by promenading audiences at London's pleasure gardens..."
