Not difficult to guess what I'm reading at the moment...

Another quote from 'The Henry Wood Proms':

"The fountain in the arena at the Proms was Cathcart's idea, persisting to the present. It was partly to break up the standing audience a little, but also for the psychological effect of cooling the air on summer evenings, and to help maintain the appropriate degree of humidity in the atmosphere. About five feet in diameter [in 1895], it was an attractive sight from the start with its flowers, ornamental rocks, and soon its famous goldfish. Sir Thomas Beecham's fantasy was that fascinating young females were constantly falling into the fountain and being rescued by chivalrous swains. The al fresco effect aksi extended to the platform, which was always decorated with palms, ornamental shrubs and, later, flowers as well."
