Slatkin steps down

Leonard Slatkin, music director of Washington's National Symphony Orchestra, is to step down from his other job, chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, in September 2004.

Slatkin has just extended his contract with the NSO until the end of the 2006 season. His contract with the BBC was initially to end in 2003, but in renewing it he said 2004 would be his last year.

The conductor said: "Four years seemed enough for me in this kind of job. With the extension of the contract in D.C., I really think that I need to focus on the orchestra's continued growth and not be holding on to two positions at the same time."

Slatkin stressed that he would continue to work with the BBC Symphony after his contract expires.

The conductor was the first American to conduct the BBC Symphony in the early 1970s. He has conducted every major orchestra in Britain and has made award-winning recordings of British repertoire, including the symphonies of Vaughan Williams and Elgar.

In 1994 he was artistic director of the Philharmonia Orchestra's Festival of American Music and in 1997 was appointed its principal guest conductor, a job he kept until becoming chief conductor of the BBC Symphony.

Slatkin's final concerts with the BBC Symphony will include a European tour and Proms concerts to mark his 60th birthday.
