Can we as Prommers do something this year for those people who have arrived to queue for their very first Prom and are feeling a bit "out of it". We were all in that position once and it was quite an experience. In my years going I can remember a Korean Girl for example who simply did not understand the language, the attitudes, the rules, the differences from her own country etc. I suggest we nominate every day some person or persons to go down the queue to "chat up" the newcomers and make them welcome. I don't of course mean the hundreds who arrive at 05.45pm for example but those who are starting out to be dedicated Prommers and who arrive to queue for most of the day.
I know you may feel that we do that naturally but honestly, we don't and there is many a person who goes away with the wrong impression, as that Korean Girl did many years ago. It really can be an intimidating experience and it would help to refute the unfriendly reputation that "some" of the Prommers have given us over the years.
I have not had too much time to prepare this so please consider it as a "White Paper" for you to consider or reject. However, don't ignore it as I feel something should be done in this area and I am only putting it out for consideration.
