I've only managed the one Prom in person so far - JEG and Israel in Egypt late night on Tuesday. Enjoyed it but I can't help but feel that a programme of nearly 1hr 45 mins is far too long for a late Prom. I've heard this band and choir in rather perkier form, and finding the soloists from the choir was interesting but perhaps not the best solution to the vasty wastes of the Hall's interior.
Also I want to be heretical and say I was disappointed by the Belshazzar's Feast on the opening night, which we listened to on a decent stereo system, with the TV pictures silently in the corner. The opening chorus by the massed men's voices was not quite together, and throughout the work there were longish shots on the TV screen which showed a pretty large number of the choir (the men were much worse offenders than the women) with their heads buried in their scores. There just wasn't that extra spark of excitement there, altho' Leonard Slatkin took some passages extremely quickly for such a large body of singers. I really don't think it was simply the dulling effect of hearing it through radio rather than live. Would love to know what other people thought.
Should say that my other half and no. 1 son (aged 8) went to the 'Nation's favourite music' prom on Sunday and really enjoyed it. Many thanks to all the Prommers who allowed him a good view of what was going on - he really appreciated it.
