Subject: First Night - "Just Another Concert"?

This is not so much a comment on the quality of the First Night this season as on the programming.

I have to confess a certain amount of disappointment that the BBC has moved away again from the "one big choral piece" programming for the First Night, which always seemed to launch the festival so definitively. Instead, we got a sampler -- half a concert of Spanish theme, half a concert of Walton/Old Testament stuff. All very well, and at any other point in the season it would have been fine. But on the First Night, it seemed a bit tame.

Better by far to put The Creation as an opener (and what better way to start the season than with the creation of the universe?) and the Spanish/Walton concert somewhere else. The Proms season should start with a bang, and frankly, this was a whimper.
