Oh, I'll turn up alright on the basis that (a) any M8 is better than none - just - and (b) at least the sound from the NYO will be big with the huge forces at their disposal and one of the top Mahlerians at the front. My disappointment in this is that for such a (potentially) life-memory inducing night he's not using a more mature orchestra. Whatever their talent and enthusiasm, its no good pretending the NYO are as good as a high-rank professional orchestra because they are not.

As for Sir S sorting out the BPO, the evidence of my own ears over the last few years in the RAH and other venues is that the Professors will certainly benefit from Rattle at the front, compared with the shows under Abbado. I think the BPO are very conductor-sensitive, witness their excellent Bruckner and Beethoven last year under Haitink.

Keeping me happy is easy - I have been transported beyond delight in recent years by the other regular youth orchestra at the Proms, the EUYO, particularly their M7 a couple of years ago and their Alpine the year before that.
