We're getting very forthright on this issue aren't we!

Don't get me wrong, I'm a long standing class A whinger on these issues. And, though it's human nature to think things were better in the old days, I think they probably were.

For any passing readers of this forum, it really is important to emphasise that criticising coughers, rustlers and phone-fanatics has _nothing_ whatever to do with us being "upper class toffs" or "snobs" or any of that cack that gets levelled at orchestral concert goers.

Virtually all of us are completely ordinary, often not at all wealthy, (fairly) well balanced individuals. We're there to hear the music, end of story. We don't object with such venom to (invariably psychosomatic) coughing on the basis of some social pretention. It's because it's darned annoying when you're trying to listen to something which requires concentration and thought to get anything much from it.

Those of us who really want to listen to the music may be a seriously endangered species, but give us a break, please.

On a random tangent, I remember a few years ago a guy who assiduously read a copy of the Evening Standard throughout Mahler 2. However, he took so much care not to make any noise with it, I couldn't work out whether to blow my top or admire him for his determination to obtain alternative entertainment. Bizzarre....

End of random thoughts....
