The reason that Rattle is using the NYO for Mahler Eight next year is by way of a reheasal for eventual performance (and recording) in Berlin. By the way, he is also doing 8 in Birmingham at the same time: why he was allowed to pass up the chance of conducting the Birmingham premiere of this wonderful work, leaving it in the hands of Mark Elder, has always been a mystery to me.
