Last night 2001

Just thought I'd get a very early piece of speculation in on the basis of a interview with Leornard Slatkin in the Guardian this week. Ives 'Variations on America' (aka The National Anthem).

Well - yes it's a very interesting idea. The appointment of Slatkin as the Gerbil's successor could mean an all-American Last Night of the Proms. We've had plenty of Gershwin in recent years; we had a Sousa march a few years ago; this year even Rogers and Hammerstein so it wouldn't be that radical.

But I don't suppose the traditional numbers will disappear.

Have I got correctly got the impression that Slatkin is replacing Andrew Davis then...?

I guess I'm pleased if that's the case. As well as an unsurprising American slant Slatkin seems to be more of a champion of British music than most British conductors (Hicox Davis Handley and a few others excepted). All-in-all a very good choice IMHO. And he'll probably be good at and for the last night palaver...

I for one am all in favour (or should it henceforth be more polite to use favor?) of the BBCSO's new director designate. I suspect we shall have a journey of discovery of our own music as well as that of the USA. I certainly don't think that the routine palaver of the Last Night will be in any way affected I imagine Slatkin has a lot of respect for its traditions and will be keen to observe them.
From what I hear most of the players are pleased too.

BTW now that we are losing The Gerbil does anyone know of a nickname for the New Boy?

Gary
