It seems that even now the "musical establishment" still have a problem with Malcolm Arnold's vocal rejections of alienating serialism etc. To be fair, recently he's been played more at the proms than most places ("The Sound Barrier" on the last night in ?99, and the second symphony in ?94).

The BBCPhil are doing a series of programmes in Manchester to celebrate his 80th, but to the best of my knowledge these are all "Studio 7" jobs rather than full public concerts. The 01/02 Bridgewater hall programme isn't out yet though, so he may get a proper airing in Manchester at least. It's conceivable that they may bring something to the Proms....

I think the organ isn't being decomissioned until the end of this season (could be wrong). However, much as I can't do without my annual fix of having my insides shaken around by the gothic monster that is the RAH organ, it's now so thoroughly knackered that it can't cut it anymore.

I only hope that when it comes back online in ?2003 it makes it's proms return in an appropriate fashion. Something that confirms it's once more up to "frightening the natives" as Gary put it. Khachaturian's 3rd symphony for example; I'm sure that even the 25 trumpets wouldn't be able to drown the RAH organ if it's back the way it used to be!
