Subject: Some other thoughts

While experimenting last night with the lux goods, I had some other thoughts I wanted to share. Some may be well know, but I figured better be safe than sorry.

Military:
· Timing of Academy: It does appear that even though an academy does not effect your results in the 2 first fights, that building it earlier results in a experience build-up that has a positive effect in the 3rd battle. I built my Academy only after the first 2 battles and when I sent 16 chariots to Tyre I got only 8 back, while Elf built his Academy before any additional troops were recruited and got 12 back.
· Timing of the Qaadesh battle is limited to December deployment (and you need 16 chariots, 15 will not do) if you want lux goods by June (see my other post for full details).

Prosperity Rating:
· Prosperity rating increases at the end of every quarter. It can increase by a maximum of 10 points per quarter, based on the level of housing. The 10 point maximum is also adjusted by certain factors, the main ones of concern in Exile is employment, so try to maintain it at 0-5%. Also, not having a profit at year end will prevent any PR increases that year, so don’t let that happen. So you can time the latest you can evolve your houses by moving from the Sept 48 back (i.e. Sept 48 1 manor, June 48 Fancy residence, March 48 Elegant …). This helps in timming when to introduce pottery, beer, and papyrus to save on consumption of goods (you also need to time the Bast blessings along with introduction). A main point here is concentrate on military early on, you have plenty of time to get 100PR.
· Housing block layout: I set my housing block up as an upside-down L with the palace at the north-east and my mansion near the south. Then I put houses along the long north south part of the upside down L. I put a pavilion in the south, after a road block with the road through the pavilion leading to the bottom mines. Then I put an additional rectangular block to the west of the L (but within 1 sqaure to pick up labor access), but connected to the top of the long north south part of the L, where I put all my negative desirability buildings that did not need to be in the housing block (Zoo, senet, dance school, musician school, juggler school, Storage yards). This allows entertainment from the destination walkers without introducing any cross-roads in your main block.
· Do not pay for any beautification. With the desirability of the buildings in the main block (i.e. mansion, temple, school, courthouse) and the benefit of gardens and plaza (neither of which you have to pay for), I was able to get all my housing to Fancy residence and 1 manor, without any statues.

Culture Rating:
· While I started with 14 2x2 houses, in December I only had 6 fancy and 1 manor. I deleted some along the way but in December you can freely delete many houses (again for free). The reason you would do this is to save money on Culture rating. For instance, in the end I had 652 people, so I needed only 1 pavilion and 1 booth, whereas if you have over 700 you need an additional bandstand. Staying under 700 saves you on religious purchases also (for 100 CR you need 1 temple for every 375 for patron and 750 for local). Temples are more cost effective than shrines. Now you may be saying won’t deleting all this housing lead to unemployment problems. That’s no worry that’s why you wait to December to do it, then adjust priority so that religion, entertainment, education, and health are 1-4, the rest is not needed for the last month.
