Subject: It's not that, per se. It's more of a quick symbol Christian's used during times of persecution. See, back then, if you said, "Hey man, you a Christian?", you'd be fucked. So what they did was this: Whenever a follower saw someone else who looked like a follower as well, he'd scratch a Jesus Fish in the sand, you know, subtly. With his sandals. If you saw someone doing that today, you'd think something was wrong with him. But if another follower saw the symbol, he/she knew it was safe to interact about Christ.

It's like a membership card, but this way, unless a soldier could see you in the act, you weren't arrested on sight for beign a Christian.
