Subject: Rough-legged Hawk in Henry County

This afternoon I observed a juvenile Rough-legged Hawk in Henry County, just south of the intersection of State Hwy. 281 and Township Road 11. The bird was a light morph and had prominant dark carpal patches and a dark belly band; the bird most closely resembled a juvenile to me (vs. female). The hawk frequents a tall grass/brush area (Turkeyfoot Pheasant Preserve?)that is somehow under the domain of the state of Ohio as a "wildlife preserve", primarily for the purposes of hunting. Also present in that same area have been a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk, and a juvenile and a female Northern Harrier. The bird displays classic Rough-legged behavior: perching on thin twigs at the tips of shrubs and hovering in flight searching for prey.

I have also looked at this same area for the presence of either Short-eared Owls or Northern Shrike but have not seen these birds within the same area.

Hunting is on going in that area, so use caution if you venture into the grass. I will probably go back and look for the hawk again since it is only a mile from my parent's homestead.
