Subject: Phone hotline transcript-Pine grosbeaks not far from Toledo

Normally, I do not post transcripts, but thought birders may be especially interested in the Pine grosbeak report from Allegan county, MI with the coming weekend.

Clearly, this is the closest a large group of Pine grosbeaks has been to Toledo in a very long time.

This area is 3 hours or less from Toledo.

"In Allegan County, MI, south of Grand Rapids along Lake Michigan, a flock of 70 Pine grosbeaks were discovered yesterday just east of the village of Douglas. From Toledo, take 23 North to I-94 in Ann Arbor. Go west on 94 to route 131 in Kalamazoo. Go north on 131 to route 89. Head west/northwest on 89, which turns into route 40. Take 40 NW to 196. Head west, and then south on 196. Take the Douglas exit off of 196 and follow the Blue Star Hwy, also called A-2, toward Douglas. About a mile south of Center street, which is the only traffic light, turn east at the yellow blinking light on Wiley Rd. (130th Ave.) and travel about 2.5 miles to 62nd St. Turn left here on Riverside Rd. At the bottom of the hill the pavement ends and just beyond park along the roadside and scan the marshlands of Morrison Bayou to the north. The folks in the big house on the hill here have been very nice to birders in the past and they appreciate what their home looks over, so they may also show some interest in what you're seeing.

Also present in the area yesterday included a half-dozen Rough-legged hawks, over a hundred Sandhill cranes, and a single Northern shrike. The Pine grosbeaks were seen coming into roost at 5pm. This is a very large number of Pine grosbeaks, and well south of where they are usually found. In fact, the latitude of this location is a mere 60 miles or so north of Toledo. From Toledo, the Douglas Area is a short 3 hour car ride.

On the east side of the Lower Peninsula, the Livonia Grenn-tailed towhee continues to cooperate for hundreds of birders. It was still present this morning. If you have not seen this western stray, and are interested in going the hour to southern Wayne county, then leave a message with your name and number and I will call you back with directions to the bird's location.

Back in Ohio, there have been few local reports in the last week. On the Gypsum CBC held yesterday, which covers the Sandusky Bay marshes, a very rare mid-winter Indigo bunting was discovered at the Resthaven Wildlife area, which is an hour to the east of Toledo.

Maumee Bay State park continues to offer Short-eared owls, which are easiest to find at dusk. Try parking at the beach parking lot, and looking west toward the sledding hill. Also at Maumee Bay State Park, the Northern shrike continues to be present in a very hit-or-miss pattern. It has been seen just as often around the sledding hill, as it has in the campgrounds..."
