Subject: Downright looney

With the weekend here, people may be wondering where to go look for birds. Well, if Common loons are what you are after, then you should have an easy time of it this weekend.

Perhaps surprising to some, but all of these Common loons are really not that unusual in NW Ohio this time of year. They are a fixture on many inland lakes, quarries, and reservoirs throughout the month of April in NW Ohio (and elsewhere in Ohio).

This afternoon's brief checks:

Hidden harbour lake: Only 1 Common loon, in near-breeding plumage. However, it was a mere 20 feet from my car--fabulous. Horned grebes were down too, with "only" 11 present. These all on the main lake (west). On the east lake, the approximate 40 Redheads remained, and were joined today by a few new birds: 4 Canvasbacks, a few Widgeon and also Gadwall.

Whiteford Quarry: 1 Horned grebe, and 8 Common loons.

I did not check Salisbury today.

Directions:

Hidden harbour lake--a subdivision on the north side of Angola road, a couple or 3 miles west of McCord. Take the WEST entrance to the subdivision, and take the first turn to the WEST that you can (it says "no outlet") . This winds around to a dead-end in a small parking lot.

Whiteford quarry: The NE corner of Sterns and Whiteford road in Michigan, about a mile east of 23. From Sterns, go north on Whiteford just a few yards, and pull off on the east side of the road. There is a smallish, but rather steep hill you need to climb that overlooks the quarry.

**A scope is quite helpful at both locations, but definitely necessary at Whiteford.
