For the ivys, anyway. Other schools' seasons began a couple weeks ago, with numerous weather postponments and cancellations, but still some games under their belt.
Princeton and Cornell highly ranked pre-season, with Harvard close behind. Remainder of the league is jumbled, each with promise from newcomers (coaches and players) and questions (player losses).
This weekend, from where I sit:
Penn State @ Princeton: PU, a preseason favorite for Memorial Day weekend, returns a roster full of potential AA players and is the equal of anyone, but must show they can win the final big tournament games. PSU had been ranked top 10, but lost in OT to a good Villanova team last weekend (and lost in OT last year to PU) - how motivated will they be?
Yale @ Army: Army (2-0) looks strong each year. Yale has some interesting new but untested players. As always, defense is a huge question mark, but they have a new D coach. Some significant offensive holes (graduate transfers) to fill.
Brown @ Fairfield (1-0): Brown in year 2 of new coach regime. A contender for ILT if they climb over Yale and Penn.
Cornell @ Albany: Defending NCAA champ Cornell famously graduated Tewaraton winner CJ Kirst and other leading players but always has more in the pipeline and is also top 5 ranked preseason.
Providence (2-0) @ Harvard: Harvard, still very talented, perhaps still raw over its epic second half choke against Syracuse in last year's NCAAs, is a darkhorse by some for ivy championship.
Georgetown @ Penn: Penn, with a new coach, in recent years has taken on a challenging early OOC schedule and usually performed well. But GU is generally considered this preseason to be a top 5 or 6 team.
Dartmouth @ BU (1-1): Pro - Dartmouth in year 3 of well-regarded new coach regime and has been steadily improving its roster. Con - their outstanding G, who won several games for them last season, graduated, and last weekend they lost a scrimmage to D-3 Tufts (albeit Tufts is D-3 NCAA champion). BU has been on an upward trajectory itself and is a strong Patriot Leauge team.
Fans of other teams can add better insight.
