Subject: NFL Working with College Presidents to Form Super League

Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd just reported that the NFL is working with unnamed college officials to form a "super league" of college teams, who would presumably break away from the NCAA to form their own self-governed entity.

To me, this would lay bare the reality of the new NIL/transfer portal landscape: This is pro football with slightly younger players.

To me, a huge part of the attraction of college football is COLLEGE: the marching band composed of students, the pretty cheerleaders composed of students, the crazed alumni who were once students. There was at least the veneer that this was an extracurricular activity pursued by actual students, however much we the fans had to squint our eyes and delude ourselves that a kid could practice five days a week, lift, train, study film and then travel hundreds if not thousands of miles while still going to class, studying, taking exams and writing papers.

Now all the pretense will be ripped away.

If I want to watch pro football, I can watch the NFL and the UFL.

I weep for the death of college football.

Well if college football goes in that direction, then Congress should take away their not-for-profit status, thus eliminating the tax deductibility for donors. Right now we have college coaches and administrators making more money than NFL coaches and management. NFL teams pay income taxes and so should this new super league if that becomes reality.

Don't believe that we can say "if college football [basketball] goes in the direction" of Super Leagues and professionalism, it has already happened with the NIL collectives and transfer portal consuming collegiate sports.

Danny Wolf is off to Michigan for NIL money and Nana and Mack will be doing likewise. The Final Four teams' starting lineups are largely comprised of transfer portal players. Astoundingly, NC State is popularly referred to as the "Cinderella", while their top 7 players are all transfer portal players. My nursery book version of Cinderella did not refer to highly-compensated carpetbaggers sweeping the floors in the castle!

The taxation issues are complex although a new look is justified. What really needs to happen, though, is that we, the sports-watching consumers, need to reject the marketing hype and collegiate rah-rah surrounding this entertainment product and call it out for what it is, the professional minor leagues.

Maybe I’m paranoid (wait… what? ME?)but I have faith in Goodell to muck this up somehow. It requires a deft touch and balancing a lot of non-financial considerations, which does not sound like the intern-in-chief we’ve come to know and tolerate.

Europe has soccer academies that educate the kids and prep them for soccer too. Let the NFL teams do the same with some kids.

I do not care. I am rooting for my team. Let the kid go be a pro, there are plenty more that fans will follow and fill stadiums to watch.

I read several articles on this topic. While some form of super league seems to be in the works, this new league may struggle to launch in the near future.

An Oregon newspaper indicated that the Super League proposal has fallen on deaf ears when its comes to the power players in college football - the Big Ten, SEC, ESPN and FOX - who currently control the majority of revenue, exposure and media rights. The Big Ten, SEC, Big 12 and ACC all have their media rights tied up through at least 2030. Thus, it seems very unlikely they will voluntarily break those deals so far in advance of their termination.
