Adam Schefter
@AdamSchefter
ESPN Sources: Former Yale C Danny Wolf has committed to play for Michigan and Coach Dusty May. Wolf averaged 14.1 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 blocks per game while leading Yale to the round of 32. Major portal recruit, he had a multitude of options, but he wanted to play at Michigan.

That's a major loss at Yale.

Again a short-sighted move to leave an Ivy for Michigan or USC. Granted those are both good schools, but Danny Wolf giving up a Yale education to play at Michigan is a dumb move in my opinion. Maybe he can make the NBA from either school, but attending Yale is such a rare opportunity for most students.

As a Yale alumnus, I always believed, like RedWin that attending Yale was "a rare opportunity." I would have hoped that Yale was "a rare opportunity" for Danny Wolf, as well.

The standard line is that Wolf is leaving for the NIL money and greater NBA exposure. I am certain that is true, but the anti-Israel and pro-Hamas protests at Yale may well be a contributing factor. Wolf is Jewish and played for the Israeli National Team this past summer, and I recall James Jones wearing a pro-Israel pin on his jacket for several games this year.

I am pleased to see that Yale is finally arranging to arrest some of the protesting occupiers on Beinecke Plaza. Hopefully, the embarrassing situation will improve.

Knowling is a Yale senior. He is graduating! Wolf is a sophomore- big difference.

The protests at probably every Ivy except Dartmouth will have an adverse effect on recruiting. How do you show a recruit around campus when it looks like the inmates have taken over the institution and gutless administrators will not take charge? The President of Dartmouth used to be the President at Barnard and appears to be doing a great job. Columbia should have elevated her instead of coming up with Shafik.

... it was not a coincidence that Dartmouth went on a great run in football in the late 1960s and early 1970s when things were relatively calm on campus compared to some of our Ivy competitors.

What's the solution here, friends? We have to balance free speech vs violence vs antisemitism. What has the Columbia President done wrong? She got rid of all the outside antagonists, those committing crimes including anti-semitic chants were removed/arrested and those who wanted to peacefully protest could remain but NOT on University public space. What did she do wrong, within legal limits?

I thought Wolf had entered the portal before the protests began, but maybe this is erroneous.

There are similar protests occurring at U Michigan.

In response to Ghost, "free speech" involves a public gathering of informed folks to discuss certain issues. It is peaceful, does not include impeding the movements of fellow students, and it is limited to the time to needed to complete the discussions.

An encampment is an act of civil disobedience and is not "speech". In Yale's case, the encampment on Beinecke Plaza impedes other students, denies access to the primary student center, the Scharzman Center, and desecrates the memorial to Yale's fallen military veterans.

The occupiers of the encampment should have been given short notice (a few hours) and then arrested.

I believe that's what happened. Their encampment violated University space and therefore they were either removed or arrested. Handled correctly.

Dartmouth ain't Columbia and vice versa. Virtually anybody can walk in off Broadway or Amsterdam onto the main campus at Columbia. You've got to drive six hours into the sticks to get to Dartmouth from Manhattan. Not casting aspersions, just pointing out the obvious. Virtually every major elite university is now going through this.

I think we are being a bit shortsighted and perhaps elitist if we argue that Wolf should have stayed for a Yale education/degree or that Mack should have done the same at Harvard.

Assuming their families were each paying (in full or in part) and that the NIL is around $250K/yr as rumored in Mack's situation, these players will benefit financially to the tune of over $300,000 per year. That's almost a million for Mack and $700,000 for Wolf. In exchange, they get fine educations at Georgetown and Michigan. Although academic students don't usually choose those schools over Harvard/Yale, athletes almost always do. Thus, they are both making normal and logical choices PLUS realizing a payoff on their decisions while still in college while increasing the likelihood of having a basketball career after graduation.

No brainer and, honestly, it's rather pompous of us to see it otherwise. Also, if they care, they can always seek a degree from HBS and/or Harvard/Yale Law Schools if so inclined.

Well stated, agree 100%. Oakland University's top frontcourt player is transferring to Arizona for a shot at the bra$$ ring and to experience major college basketball's facilities, coaching, private jet travel, all the bells and whistles plus the adulation of thousands of fans at each home game.

It's a big risk, IMO. They're both long shots for the NBA, whereas neither was a "long shot" to graduate from two of the greatest schools in the country where there first job would earn them six figures right off the bat.

And sorry but I don't see either in the NBA.

But how about improving enough to earn a nice contract to play a few seasons in Europe?

Feel like that could've been accomplished in the Ivy League.

Not a chance. Competing against the centers of Columbia, Dartmouth, Penn and Harvard v competing against the centers of Purdue, Ohio State, Indiana, et al. Which forces you to get better? How many Ivy Leaguers are making big money playing basketball right now?

Danny Wolf was joined in the Wolverines' frontcourt today by 7-1 Vlad Goldin, who played the last three years at FAU under new Michigan head coach Dusty May. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

For this year at least, will Danny now get to play more power forward, a position which suits his high mobility level very well?
