Subject: P Men's Ice Hockey/Cornell Fans Author: Bengal [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 16:28:32 04/25/24 Thu The new HC of Princeton men's ice hockey is Ben Syer, who spent the last 13 years at Cornell, the last 12 of which as Associate Head Coach. Prior to that, he was 12 years as Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Quinnipiac. So, a lot of ECAC and Ivy experience. What do Cornell fans who know of him think of him? Aside that he is moving from 25 years at two top ECAC programs to one that generally struggles more often than not. If he is a Cahoon or Gadowski, it bodes reasonably well for Princeton. I am hoping he can hang onto whatever recruits Fogarty had lined up, but its been over a month of uncertainty for them, so I don't know. I hope Fogarty lands well. P MIH has never been one of the school's leading athletic programs, often middle of the pack at best, more often below than a bit above, with a relatively rare very good season. Other Ivy and ECAC teams have bigger reputations in this sport, including the two he coached in. Gadowsky was described to me as someone who recruited like a "demon" and Syer will have to do the same. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]

Which is the more difficult job, turning Cornell men's basketball into a consistent winner or doing the same with Princeton men's ice hockey? I'd say the tougher job was turning Cornell men's basketball into a consistent winner. For sure, Cornell had its run from 2007-10 including the Sweet Sixteen capstone achievement. But partially witht the benefit of hindsight, it seemed as if Steve Donahue caught lightning in a bottle, what with Jeff Foote falling into his lap because Foote's mother worked at a hospital where he was referred to Donahue or some such random chain of events. It seemed as if serendipity played a material role in the 2007-10 Big Red run. Princeton men's ice hockey is also a coaching challenge, but they've had their moments, scattered over a much longer period of time than Cornell men's basketball shining brightly for three consecutive seasons. More broadly, Princeton wins everywhere in the athletic department. I think it's just easier to win someplace where the institution knows how to win. Princeton women's basketball was similarly inconsistent as its men's ice hockey team, but after Courtney Banghart righted the ship, it just seems normal that the Tigers would dominate that sport. Like, of course, Berube wins. Haven't the Tigers always won in women's basketball? It's easier to win where you expect to win. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]
