Apparently, the Spiders are sick of the instability of the CAA.

Should be interesting to see if William and Mary joins them. Also wonder what UNH is going to do...

That’s great news! Hopefully, Yale will add them to their schedule soon. They owe Yale a return game which was cancelled in 2020.

Good for the league as a whole. For Bucknell and Georgetown, not so much.

Few would be surprised if William and Mary and Villanova join the PL as well.

We will see what happens.

As for Bucknell and Georgetown, what did they expect? With seven teams, PL football was always living on the edge. I'm not sure if anyone was ever serious about leaving the PL, but if anyone did the league would have to fold (if I understand the rules correctly). Adding teams (especially good fits like Richmond) ensures that the PL will continue for the long-term future.

"I'm not sure if anyone was ever serious about leaving the PL, but if anyone did the league would have to fold (if I understand the rules correctly)"

Yes and no.

The PL are at the minimum number of full league members (five) needed to field the sport. If one of Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lehigh, or Lafayette left, PL football would cease to be. If Fordham, Georgetown (or now, Richmond) left, it wouldn't affect that bylaw.

(No one is leaving.)

Agreed, I don't see any PL school leaving.

Good news for both Richmond and the Patriot League. Adding W&M would be great too, as I believe they are a big rival of Richmond. I think the recent success of Holy Cross football has boosted the Patriot League's overall profile.

The problem W&M has is that they are an 'all sports' member of the CAA and the league would not let them depart only for football. Villanova could follow the Richmond example easily since they also are in the CAA for football only.
I'm sure the annual rivalry game between UR and W&M will continue but probably not the final game of the season.
