Subject: Scheduling Quirks

Our friend and poster-colleague Richard Kent has a short but interesting dialogue with James Jones on IvyHoopsOnline.

Jones said two interesting things about scheduling:

(1) Yale has for many years been trying to get a game with Minnesota, who repeatedly said no. In particular, the Gophers said no to this season 2024-25. But then two things happened. Yale beat Auburn, raising the Bulldogs' profile significantly, and then Danny Wolf opted to transfer out. All of a sudden, Minnesota had a change of heart. The Gophers CALLED BACK and agreed to a game this season.

Isn't that fascinating? Prospective OOC opponents want us to LOOK STRONG as evidenced by beating Auburn in a high-profile tournament game but to actually be handicapped, as the Bulldogs' most important returning player heading elsewhere. As Jones said, "It's still tough to get games."

(2) Yale will be playing Fairfield and Delaware at Mohegan Sun. Fairfield was reluctant to play Yale home and away even after beating the Bulldogs last season, but they agreed to a meeting on a neutral floor.

Summary: OOC opponents want everything lined up for them to win. They want Ivy teams to LOOK strong, but BE WEAK.

Mitch Henderson of Princeton echoes Jones. He has said it is hard to schedule big time schools because, if the lose to an Ivy school, the coach may get fired.

Trying to recall an example of a Power 5 coach losing to an Ivy and getting fired...

... not really coming up with any.

Happy to get some help if anyone else can.
