In reply to: Boston Lion 's message, "Columbia is Stats Perform FCS National Team of Week + Earns 2 Ivy Awards" on 13:20:38 09/23/24 Mon

And ranks 34th in today's Stats Perform FCS Top 25 -- highest in the league, ahead of Harvard (35) and Yale (43).

(I'm delighted, but don't really buy it -- let's see where we are after Princeton)

Hey WL, why aren't you a Buyer? Columbia outplayed a very good Lafayette team.

Success at Columbia is relative.

I mean, good for them for the victory. But if Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale or Princeton had beaten Lafayette, no one would have cared. None of us would have gotten team of the week, that's for sure.

Graceless comment that success at Columbia is relative. To what? How about shutting out Dartmouth 19-0 on the road at night not too long ago. Relative to that particular game? In fact, we have played Dartmouth tough ever since the Bagnoli era began. Check the scores. And based upon the absurd level of competition that some of the Ivies opened with last Saturday, it’s hard to take anything away from Columbia’s win over a very good Lafayette team.

Yes, that isolated result was certainly a highlight of the "Bagnoli Era", 35-35 over 7 seasons, 20-29 in league play.

Finishing second in football the Ivy gets you into Columbia's Hall of Fame.

As I said, success is relative at Columbia.

If H, Y, P or Dartmouth defeated a quality Lafayette team, there would, in fact, be a certain level of acknowledgment and appreciation of that victory: and that coming from various quarters. And if somebody wants to simply offer joyful expression to how he/ she feels about a school team, why should that trigger immediate, gratuitous and snide commentary?

Perhaps true about team of week recognition. But i think there has been discussion in this forum in the past that beating Patriot league’s best is a big win for other Ivy teams

In any case, I am not convinced Laf is a very strong team. To my eye, Columbia will face significantly more athletic defenses and better offensive lines in league play

Shaping up to be very competitive league.

Just one game at a time. I have found some in the Columbia fanbase react to a good win a bit like an offensive lineman that scores a touchdown. Hoping Poppe takes an approach more like Barry Sanders - hand the ball to the official and get ready for next play

Speaking of “cellies”: while fun to watch both Canty and Frosh DT really emote after their big plays, I was concerned for all four of the hamstrings involved. Hoping training staff introduces special celebration stretches going forward

Indeed they did. It was an impressive win, particularly given that it was the first game under a first-time head coach and a new staff against a ranked opponent that had already played three. I love the Lions and their successes, am thrilled at their progress over the past decade and would be delighted if they ran the table. I'm looking forward to seeing them at Georgetown on Saturday. What I'm not ready to buy is that the program that managed one Ivy win last year is now the best in the conference. I believe we'll know more about the team when we see how they do against Princeton in Week 3, an annual reality check.
