Subject: Speaking of travel games

Comments/jokes have been made about Big10 teams flying time coast to coast for conference games. What may not be appreciated is the additional travel incurred just to get to and from airports.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2024/10/11/big-ten-football-long-travel/

(Note the stat that Big10 teams travelling across at least two time zones are 1-8.)

I'm not familiar with travel from Princeton to Macon GA, but I presume a charter is necessary from one of the metro airports in NYC or Philadelphia, and hope that the Macon regional airport runway is large enough to accommodate the required size of plane to avoid a further commute from Atlanta.

Almost as bad as driving to Hanover.

Voy Vey pointed out that Mercer got a guarantee game against Alabama in 2021.

A friend just observed that Mercer also plays Alabama this November 16!

When was the last time that an Ivy League team played an opponent who in the same season played the #1 FBS team in the country?

I'm thinking you'd have to go back to the 1950s? Maybe Penn or Princeton did back in the day?

I, for one, am rooting for Princeton to beat Mercer and then Mercer to beat Alabama. It will simplify the usual end of season "we beat A, who beat B, who beat C. . . . who beat Z, therefore we are national champions" transitive connections.

Anyone got anything after that?

Excellent work. I should have remembered this Cornell game as it's been mentioned on this board recently.

Uh, mayble Mercer will look past Princeton because they've got their eyes on November 16?

I think its more likely that Mercer does to Princeton what Stanford did to Cornell.

But hopefully the Tigers put up a fight!

I think it's more likely that Mercer does to Princeton what Kevin Moen did to the Stanford band.

Is Mercer that much better than when they lost to Yale in 2018?

When is the last time an Ivy (football) team played the then-#1 team in the other division?

Because UNH was #2 in I-AA when they played Dartmouth in 2005, and rose to #1 after the game.

1A vs 1AA.

And no to your answer, because those teams were both in the same classification.

They had beaten #1 Notre Dame the preceding week.
