But, times have changed — for the better IMHO. Ivy student bodies and younger alumni/ae are vastly more diverse, more international and facing critical issues younger in life. With only 24 hours in a day, they face many more issues competing for their time. We older alums lived in relatively simpler times. Frankly, I, for one, don’t believe I could manage what they face. You also have to account for alumni and the general public, who in decades gone by would have looked forward to a college game on a Saturday afternoon. Now there is so much more that competes for their attention too. Still, I think this Homecoming game could be a doozy. Plenty of interest, at least among students and alumni. If you believe that college football is supposed to be played by actual college students then the actual student-athlete might be a contributing factor to poor student interest at least at Penn. It was learned from a Penn insider that many of the players spend a great deal of time inside “the facility” (which is bright, shiny, new and very impressive) from early morning practices, meetings, therapy etc until they attend class beginning after lunch. By attend, I mean many attend classes remotely and don’t really interact with the general population. So if I can extrapolate, if I’m a regular student and an athlete doesn’t seem to want to get to know me or be a part of the actual student body, why would I want to show an interest in what the athlete does? It's not just student attendance. The biggest issue is the Ivory Tower. The local communities don't care or identify with the institutions. Duke suffers similarly in football in the ACC, and Stanford did for years in the Pac-whatever. The eight schools have deemphasized sports as a public relations tool to a fault. There are talented players at the Ivy level, but the fear of the faculty and administration in promoting such skilled men to the general public is so great that they effectively cut off their eight noses to spite their faces. The Ivy powers that be collectively WANT to go to D3, they just can't say so out loud with so many rich alums willing to spend to prop up the operations. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]
