Ivy Inquisitor (CSFL “Title” Week)

Last Saturday my picks were 4-0 and 1-0 for Ivy CSFL. That’s a testament to the teams that are expected to win are doing so. That brings the total to 22-14 and 6-3 for Cornell & Penn auxiliary sprint football.

What’s the injury status on Aidan Sayin and Jackson Proctor? If you thought a starting quarterback doesn’t lose his job to injury then ask Phil Sims and Joe Montana.

Cornell and Princeton have two conference losses. That unofficially eliminates them.

The CSFL Championship game will be decided this week. As Cornell and Army are tied for 1st in the north division. Navy and Penn are tied for first in the south division.

The topsy- turvy we’ve enjoyed the last two seasons hasn’t occurred this year but the quality of competition remains. Columbia-Dartmouth and Cornell-Brown game’s points to that.

Early September I picked Columbia finish last and Princeton to share the title with Yale. Those two are making me eat my words.

Brown is talented but sloppy. This time around it didn’t cost them a win. Brown has a rigorous schedule as Yale, Dartmouth and Columbia await. Given those conditions a wining season isn’t likely but they’re talented enough to be a trap game for their final four opponents.

Cornell is the same situation. The dynamic Jameson Wang leads to team in rushing. Is that a result of the Big Red using 4 running backs? If that’s true it doesn’t diminish Wang’s talents. Will Senior Eddie Moreno ever get the chance to step into the field????

Penn back up QB Liam O’Brien got snaps other than the goal line package. He did well taking over the injured Adian Sayin. Since 2022 I’ve been asking for him to get on the field to see what he can do. The only time special teams is mentioned is when it’s a factor in the outcome. Not this time Albert Jane averaged 43.7 on 6 Punts. Julien Stokes had a 18 yard punt return and 24.6 average on six kick returns.

Harvard QB situation is perplexing. Why is Charles De Prima’s role diminished? Craig and DePrima are perfect complements. DePrima is a runner that can throw and Craig is a thrower that can run.

Dartmouth at this point is the most complete team. This maybe their best team since 1996.

Yale is doing what’s expected. Start slow and finish strong.

Princeton year ago at least had a physical defense and their offense did barely enough to avoid a losing season. Heading into the season I expected them to lean heavily on RB Volker while the novice QB develops. I assumed that would naturally gravitate towards a smash mouth offense. The Tigers will have to fight tooth and nail to avoid their first losing season since 2011.

Columbia was trailing Dartmouth 17-0 to come up short 24-21. Hugo Merry is “kicking” himself over missing that short 1st quarter FG. To his defense this defense he’s one of the better kickers in the league. After a painfully close loss others are “kicking” themselves. What if a defender made that tackle, what if an offensive player made that block , what if the QB and receiver made that connection, Or if the RB went through a different hole? The Lions are still championship contenders and Jon Poppe should be a serious contender for Ivy COY.

Dartmouth 35 Harvard 34- This might come down to the 2xp attempt.

Brown 34 Penn 27- past two years this trap game has costed the Quakers a shot at the league championship.

Yale 28 Columbia 17. Yale simply dominates during the second half of the season.

Princeton 24 Cornell 21- This is the hardest one to predict. Princeton is weak and Cornell is inconsistent. I’ll have to default to the home team.

Ivy CSFL
Navy (5-0) 42 Pennsylvania (5-0) 17
Army (5-0) 63 Cornell (2-3) 7

Excellent write up, always appreciate these weekly thoughts.

The league is starting to separate into Harvard and Dartmouth and then everyone else (at least, that’s the way I see it). It feels like the other six teams can all beat each other on any given day, though Penn may be an outlier there.

Looking ahead, I see another slate of intriguing games:

Brown 31, Penn 21
Yale 28, Columbia 23
Cornell 21, Princeton 17

The Dartmouth-Harvard game should be a classic between the two clear best teams in the conference this year. I’ll give the slight edge to the hosts. Dartmouth 23, Harvard 20

Looking at Massey Ratings' projections for all remaining games, IF (that's a massive 'if') all of the favored teams were to win, the final standings would look like this:
1-Harvard/Dartmouth 6-1
3-Yale/Columbia 4-3
5-Princeton 3-4
6-Penn/Brown 2-5
8-Cornell 1-6

It's practically a guarantee that that won't happen, but it's an interesting exercise and seems to back up Moonbear's "Harvard & Dartmouth then everyone else" assertion. Not surprisingly, it also seems to imply that we might look back at this coming Saturday's game in Hanover as the game that ultimately determines the title.

Moon Bear and Voy Vey: I appreciate getting your thoughts this weekend’s games. To further clarify this weekend the CFSL champion game will be set. Army & Cornell are tied for first in the CSFL North and Penn & Navy in the South. These division co-leaders will play each other next.

As for Ivy conventional football it’s premature to proclaim a league champion. If Columbia, Harvard and Brown were to fall (Which I’m predicting) that will give each two conference losses. Thus to my theory they’d be unofficially eliminated from contention. If The Big Green can handle Harvard and next Week Columbia , then they’ve clinched at worse a share of the championship.

Going back to my two loss assumption, a two league loss champion has occurred only three times: 1963, 1982 and 2023. If The Crimson and Lions come out on top then we might get that topsy- turvy finish down the stretch. If this weekend’s games continue to go as expected, there’s still a possibility of Brown and Cornell making some noise down the stretch. Don’t forget about Yale because they get very dangerous come November. Columbia is back to its normal self as regular winner and a distant dark horse contender. Penn and Princeton’s desperation to avoid a losing season may make them dangerous.

The final month should be fun. I love Ivy League Football.

Are killing us—Townsend and Goodwin hurt the most. But we have also lost our starting LT, one of our starting DLs and a few other guys who were counted don as well.

Harvard beats Dartmouth.

Yale wins.

Cornell wins.

Brown wins.

Wouldn't be surprised if every one of those was wrong. Yet another outstanding slate of games in the nation's best conference.
