Subject: Marcus Spears Throws 55-Yard Strike

ESPN just broadcast a video clip shot before last night's Giants-Steelers game. Analysts Marcus Spears and "Stanford" Steve Coughlin were goofing around on the turf at what used to be called Heinz Field.

Stanford Steve challenged Spears to throw a football from the end zone to where Stanford Steve was standing on the other side of midfield line. Spears was wearing a dress shirt.

How do you think Spears, a 41-year-old, 315-pound former LSU defensive end did?

He threw a frozen rope.

It was a tight spiral on a line which hit Stanford Steve in the hands. Coughlin bent over at the waist to field the throw, but did not have to move his feet.

When was the last time you threw a football pass? A real, downfield pass?

I try it from time to time. It's very frustrating. You don't think of throwing a football pass as a body motion that requires young man muscular strength. But as I get older, my middle-aged passes are a sad, forlorn shell of their former selves.

I used to work in a building where a person could throw a nerf football 100 yards on the floor. Nobody could do it. Then one day a guy who had played quarterback at Columbia stepped up to the challenge. Perhaps foreshadowing the Lions' improvement on thei field, he ripped it. The cheering sounding like the Roman Colosseum with Russell Crowe at the center.

It is very hard for a grown man to throw a football 50 yards.

I'll bet Jaden Daniels will be able to do it in 25 years.
