That is a surefire formula for losing. It is little wonder that all of the other teams scored their most points against Brown. What was even stranger was why Brown seldom blitzed. Brown had more sacks this year (16) than in 2023 (13) and 2022 (13), yet Brown allowed 33.6 points per game this year vs. 29 in 2023. Brown also allowed 13 more yards per game in 2024 than in 2023. It seemed that Brown allowed more big plays and had a more inconsistent offense this year than in 2022 and 2023. There were times that the defense played well, but there were just too many lapses and too much inconsistency. Best of luck to the DC, but this just wasn't working, for whatever reason. Then it collapsed against Bryant. Then it returned to form against URI, Princeton, and Cornell (at least to the extent that it didn’t lose the games outright). Then it was utterly atrocious for the rest of the season. It’s beyond time to move on. If Brown can muster even a league average defense, we can finish top-4 most years with the offensive scheme Perry cooks up (though that was hampered by a head-scratching number of turnovers this year). And considering where the program was when Perry took over, there has been slight improvement. But not what was hoped for. Furthermore, many other programs were able to right their ship by year five, Yale, Princeton, even Columbia. So what happened to Brown? Damned if I know. Watching Columbia play defense was a joy. Their secondary was on each Brown receiver like a mustard plaster. There were no easy catches. On the other hand, virtually every time Columbia made a catch, there was little or no coverage. How could this be? Did the Columbia QB have too much time to pass? Quite Possibly. But the bottom line is Brown's defense was horrible. Next year, Perry will really have his back to the wall. If there is no improvement, the Brown alumni are going to be screaming for his head, legend or no legend. People only have so much patience for losing, and now the wick is down to the carrying plate.
