When Indiana and Notre Dame kicked off earlier this evening, I felt a tinge of wistfulness that, as an Ivy football fan, I am not able to sit in the stands and watch my team compete for a national championship.
But then I caught myself.
All of us *will* be able to sit in the stands and watch our teams compete for a national championship, starting in ten months. Just the thought of it brings a smile to my face.
Now that this is our new reality, I have a prediction. I hope that all of us will be around to witness my optimism turn into prescience.
I predict that, within twenty (20) years, at least one of the following numbers will have increased.
Ivy League Football National Championships
-------------------------------------------------
Yale 18 NCAA sanctioned, 27 claimed
Princeton 15, 28
Harvard 8, 12
Cornell 3, 5
Penn 0, 7
Dartmouth 0, 1
Columbia 0, 2
Brown 0, 0
Although the gap between the NCAA-sanctioned titles and the claimed championships can seem large, that is not entirely explained by rampant exaggeration.
The NCAA is very conservatve in declaring shared championships. Keep in mind that, in most cases, there were no overlaping schedules between the old Eastern powers and the ascending "new money" schools in the South and Midwest. Yale and Princeton are on reasonable ground in many of their unsanctioned but claimed titles.
The only school which seems clearly over its skis is Columbia. That's okay; the Lions just had a special season, a little irrational exuberance can be excused.
That's my prediction: 20 years or fewer for an Ivy FCS national championship. I hope that we're all here to see it.
