In reply to: M3 's message, "The NIL and Stanford" on 12:27:43 01/07/25 Tue

Stanford, like Harvard and Princeton, is in a tough spot, because those three schools try to win at everything. If Stanford gets into The NIL Game is a serious way, the dollar signs are going to get big in a hurry.

In every sport, Stanford will be up against the most maniacal fan/alumni base in that sport. In football, Stanford will be up against the IPTAY Association at Clemson. In basketball, the boosters at Carolina and Duke. In water polo, the deep-pocketed alumni at USC, UCLA and Pepperdine.

At some point, this will affect Stanford's general fundraising from alumni. If I'm a Cardinal fan and I've just written a big check so that our guys in helmets and pads can be competitive against Florida State and SMU, I'm not writing another big one to fund the physics department.

I don't think this is a winnable game, nor do I think that a serious institution of higher learning should want to win it.

The NIL Game is one in which you will always be competing against the least common denominator in a given sport. In life, choose spheres of competition where you are competing against THE BEST (which is realistic for your level of skill and resources), not the least.

And that's for a second tier (by serious college football standards) QB.
