Subject: The Ancient Eight

Hello

Have any of you read "The Ancient Eight" from John Feinstein which came out in last September? It focuses on the 2023 season.

Even if it was repetitive from times to times and kinda felt short I did enjoy the reading. For a newbie Ivy League enthousiast from France like myself it was full of informations and trivia. For instance I didn't know coaches Teevens and coach Murphy were that close, the retirement from the latter make even more sense for me now.

For the ones who read the book what did you think of it?

Indeed, I don't think anyone will put it in Feinsten's Top Ten.

In addition to the repetition (You've said that already. You've said that twice already...), I felt like the book was 50 pages of stories and 100 pages of game recaps.

Maybe I'm just too close to the subject matter. Maybe he does his best work in basketball. While I was happy to pay the $35, I was underwhelmed.

Happy to know if anyone felt differently...

I’m reading it now. It definitely was repetitive in places. Also noticed some factual errors , such as saying the Ivy League went to a 10 game schedule in 1978. ( It was 1980). I also felt he underrepresented Yale. Still, I’m enjoying it. I’ve learned quite a few things from reading it, such as the Ivy League only uses seven officials instead of eight to save money. He also gives excellent back stories about the players and coaches. It reinforced my opinion that Tim Murphy is the greatest coach in Ivy League history.

He also called Sammy McCorkle Dartmouth's former defensive coordinator (he wasn't).

I enjoyed the story behind the "Murphy Leap."

I think Dave Archer came across as the classy guy everyone says he was.

Yes, Archer came off well. I have sympathy for him. He really loved Cornell.

So actually... in 2009, Sammy WAS the Defensive Coordinator for a single season. The team went 2-8 and Don Dobes was brought in for 2010. So, technically, Sammy IS the former Defensive Coordinator. A credit to BT that he kept Sammy in the fold.

I believe you!

I have zero recollection of it, though. :)

Poor performance by Feinstein, whose talent far exceeds his product here. Still, it's better than the Ivy basketball book published earlier this year, which would have flunked a first-year English class.

For a Dookie, he loves to write about the IL. Buyer’s regret?

I love reading his material generally and am glad he's interested in Ivy athletics. However, this effort was subpar.

Possible but IMO doubtful. As his books attest, he has always been supportive of Ivy and Patriot League sports - for example, for several years he was the radio color commentator for Navy football - and admires their approach. While he has been critical of his alma mater about some things, overall I think he is proud of his association.

Others may feel differently.
