Subject: Harvard at Penn Overtime, Saturday Night 2/22

Who has had the opportunity to watch Saturday night's Harvard-Penn contest? The end of regulation was an egregious example of game mismanagement by Penn. It should never have reached overtime.

Before I get into the substance of the matter, might I take a moment to comment on noted Quaker homer color analyst Vince Curran?

Vince is unapologetically a homer, often comically so. Other color analysts such as Dartmouth's Dave Faucher or Princeton's Noah Savage don't hide their loyalties, but they still call the game with some deference to truth.

Curran offers no such sensibilities. It's all Penn all the time. Every call against the Quakers is wrong.

Amazingly, on Saturday night, Penn added to the long history of Ivy teams which come back from down 17.

The Quakers came all the way back to take the lead with two minutes to play. Was Vince fired up in his usual manner? No, he was relaxed and jovial, fun and even-tempered. I think even Vince cannot muster enthusiasm for the Quakers now. That's a scary prospect for Penn men's basketball.

Anyway, the Quakers were up 3 with about 30 seconds left. Penn had the great advantage in that Harvard was not yet in the bonus.

Donahue decided to start fouling Harvard as soon as the Crimson inbounded the ball, opting to send the Quakers to the foul line for two free throws instead of a possible tying three.

I understand the concept, but I would have at least allowed Harvard to waste a few seconds dribbling across half court before fouling them. Fouling immediately instead of waiting a few seconds seemed not to be a problem, because Harvard was still down 3 with only five seconds left and Penn still had a one-and-one to give.

Denouement: Incredibly, Penn knocks down the half-court inbounds pass, but Harvard STILL hits the three and then wins in overtime. Unbelievable.
