Subject: Columbia Win over Princeton WBB to Take Sole Possession of First Place

Columbia WBB earned a hard-fought away-game 64-60 win over an excellent Princeton squad, which completed a Columbia sweep of Princeton this season, snapped Princeton's longest-in-the-nation 30-game home winning streak, and was the first time anyone had beaten Princeton at home since Columbia did it two years ago in 2023.

Princeton is a platinum-level program whose enduring presence at the top of the league tables is consistently impressive. But the Lady Lions showed their mettle and "held their bottle" (as they say in Kitty Henderson's Australia) to emerge on top.

It's remarkable that the Lions could lose stellar players to graduation, including the all-everything, and now WNBA contract player, Abbey Hsu, and still compete at this level. Columbia Head Coach and WBB alumna, Megan Griffith, Columbia Class of 2007, has the right stuff, and we are very fortunate to have her guiding our Lions. Bravo, players, and bravo, Megan! Go Lions!

One could make an argument that Saturday afternoon was the most important win of Megan's career.

She and her team had two amazing seasons the last two years but, in both cases, Princeton was the better team.

Pending something truly extraordinary down the stretch, this will be the first time ever that Columbia stands astride the Ivy League as basketball champion.

Congratulations to Coach Griffith and her players.

AO: Well observed, Observer. Columbia vs. Princeton has aspects of Alonzo vs. King Kong in Training Day. Just kidding of course.

I'm not familiar with that particular element of popular culture, but I feel it is a void in my knowledge which needs filling.

If both Megan and Carla stick around, which is not assured but is still my likeliest scenario, they are going going to be Godzilla and King Kong dueling above the streets of Tokyo, with Harvard available at all times should one of them slip.

And you can't beat the contrast in personalites: Megan open and transparent, feisty and in-your-face; Carla cool and reserved, quiet and closed.

As they say about boxing: Styles make fights.

I, for one, thought that Megan out-coached Carla on Saturday afternoon. On the other hand, despite being outcoached, Princeton was only down four at the final buzzer. I'm not sure how that happened. Columbia seemed as if they could have pulled away at any time in the second half.

AO: Smart post. Yeah, I had the King Kong vs. Godzilla example in mind, which is why I reached for Training Day and King Kong. If you google Training Day Alonzo King Kong and watch the YouTube clip, you'll see what I mean.

"Dueling above the streets of Tokyo" is a great graphic.

I've told Megan for years now that her most remarkable quality is that, unlike 98% of other coaches, she ALWAYS gives pressers in which 1 she delivers valid insights, and 2 the tired, nausea-inducing sports cliches are entirely absent.
