Subject: Yale Dug Deep With A Minute to Play. That's How Champions Do It.

This game felt like a repeat of last night's game. Yale was clearly the better team, just as I felt the Tiger women were superior.

In both cases, the better team looked to be in full control well into the third quarter and marginally in control into the fourth. Then, what the hell happened?

How did Princeton catch up? They didn't seem to be doing anything different. Yes, zone defense on some Yale trips down the court. The Tigers moving the ball better but still the same offensive game plan.

All of sudden, it's crunch time and the Princeton men and the Harvard women are ahead. At least in the women's game, you could tell why.

Harmoni Turner played one of the great games in Ivy history and Princeton just left poor ol' Olivia Hutcherson out there by herself on an island. No help defense, so sagging man-to-man to clog up the lane, no double teams coming from the weak side even though you knew that two of the Crimson players literally wouldn't shoot even if they received the ball on the perimeter wide open.

The difference is that Yale dug down deep in the final minute. Poulakidas' slightly off balance three-pointer over a fully extended Blake Peters is one of the great shots of this season. And there have been a lot of them in 2025.

Yale showed the heart of a champion today.

Question for others: Xaivian Lee takes a step-back three-pointer with three seconds to play, the shot that went in against Dartmouth and Columbia.

The ball comes off the back iron. Pierce goes up for it strong. Townsend is off balance and makes an awkward attempt at the rebound.

Pierce comes down with the ball secure in both hands. Townsend was already falling and his arm is locked up with Pierce's. Townsend in his natural motion downward pulls Pierce all the way to the floor.

While Pierce is sitting on his back side on the wood, time expires.

The question is: Did Townsend foul Pierce? That would have sent Pierce to the line for a one-and-one.

We see this all the time. A call which would have been made at any other point in the game does not get called because there is one second left and free throws would have been 100% determinative of the outcome.

Refs don't like to be put in that situation.
