Last season I could only bring myself to attend a couple of games and didn’t use my season tickets because I could not even give them away. Not sure if we will have an immediate Jon Poppe turnaround, largely because football had many of the pieces in place and we have a significant talent deficit in MBB, but at least we should be able to put a team on the floor capable of playing defense and not giving up an average of 90 PPG in IL play.

As I asked before, any relation to Carl?
:)

They're both from Pennsylvania and of Scandinavian/Norwegian ancestry; and if Kevin can have one-half the steadying impact on the basketball program that Carl did, upon the University community in the aftermath of the student riots of 1968, he'll be making you quite proud.

Thank you, big V. I just couldn't help myself with that name!

I hope and pray for a similar effect on both the team, and by extension, the institution, in these troubled times.

Carl was from a town in northwest, PA - Meadville. Kevin from Kennett Square PA, a town Southeast and 300 miles away - not very revealing for your purposes. I have determined that neither Hovde is related to your former classmates, Emmanuel Kratsios (a.k.a., Hairy Manny) and James Tryforos. Both former oarsmen, having passed the seventy mark, are doing remarkably well.

Hairy Manny continues to live up to his hirsute reputation!
Jim Tryforos, if memory serves, played football. He and some fellow '76ers of the gridiron persuasion recently shown in a photo in class notes section of CCT.

good interview with our new HC which can be accessed through gocolumbialions. I like the vibe that Hovde puts out.

Our new HC has three good first years who appear to be staying with the program. And if Noland changes his mind and decides to stay, that will help. But we don’t currently have a go to guy on the roster and really haven’t had anybody who could have filled that role in a very long time, going back to Mike Smith.

Columbia's truly experiencing a generational sports year - apart from men's basketball. And Coach Hovde's a nice man, with a great vibe and he may be deservedly draped in kind words as proferred by a coaching colleague, presently part of the Final Four. But he also appears to be inheriting a team that may be missing as many as eleven names from the 2024-5 roster; with no incoming student- athletes, as far as is known, to lend immediate support. The much-maligned and recently deposed coach somehow won twenty-five games these past two basketball seasons. How long will it take Hovde to win 25? Hope I'm wrong, though I foresee his coaching debut campaign as one wherein he won't beat a single Division-1 opponent and having Ken Pomeroy ranking his team 364th in the nation.

There is no chance at all of that happening my friend, Valmas. The Engles Nightmare is over and kudos to our Athletic Director Peter Pilling for hiring an outstanding basketball coach and person in Kevin Hovde who in my opinion (AND MANY OTHERS) will be very successful at Columbia. Of course, it will take Kevin a bit of time to take Columbia from the Ivy League cellar apartment where Engles left the program to the penthouse floor, where Coach G's team now resides, but it will definitely happen Valmas and sooner than later.

Hovde said that he might take a transfer or two but that he is looking to recruit 4 year players. Does anybody know what the current roster looks like?

Perhaps the coach can begin work in earnest to change that sometime next week.
